Question Laptop with Touchpad Question

Question for those of you with laptops...

My laptop's touchpad has worked normally up until today. Its now nearly impossible to move the mouse around the screen.

Did it get to hot? Static shock? Why would this thing just stop working correctly??

It may have just flat out broke on you.

Usually they have some type of utility to adjust the pressure sensitivity.....you could try that, see if it helps out at all.

If you didnt mess with any adjustments and you tried restarting it and it still messed up then its prob broke. For now you can just hook up a laser mouse or any kind of mouse that has a usb plug.

Were you eating chips or any greasy food while surfing???...lol

Get some glass cleaner or a neutral cleaner and wipe the pad down to clean it really good.

Might just be greasy.....

It, seemingly, got too hot. I left it on sitting on a pillow. I think the heat coming out of the machine was affecting the touchpad's sensativity.

It still acts weird but, it's working 'better'.

I have a mouse back at the office but, I just hate packing that thing with me to use the laptop. It's a hassle...

Oh well... thanks guys. Life shall go on...

You can adjust the touch sensitivity of the mousepad if required.

Click on "Start" then "Control Panel"

Then click the Mouse icon.

That will open up a dialog box and one of the tabs will be for the Touch Pad.

If you click on that, it will open another box where you can adjust the sensitivity via a slider bar.

P.S. Always put the laptop on a hard surface. The cooling fan needs to draw air though the computer or you will fry more than the touchpad.

Think of the underside of your laptop as the radiator grille

RP, It may simply need to be recalibrated, there should be some sort of Utility in the control Panel/Mouse. I'v seen some that make you follow a moving dot around for a few seconds to recalibrate it.

I'll bet it'll be OK.

And remember, Dont put your Laptop on Soft Cushi things.

EDIT: Damn... E-Adam beat me to it

Mine (work laptop, less than a year old) gets screwy sometimes after I've been using it awhile. Moisture on my fingertips seem to make a difference as well. I'm not too impressed with it. It sometimes jumps all over the screen without me even touching it...but I might be accidentally brushing against it as I type..I don't know. I do recall though, having trouble with it off and on after prolonged use. I usually make sure my hands are nice and clean (and dry) and also wipe down the touchpad with a very lightly dampened napkin...then wipe with a dry napkin. Seems to help it.

I have tweaked settings, stood on my head, let it cool off, and it's still doing it...

I distinctively recall getting 'shocked' by it (static) last night before this started... I'm assuming I zapped it. Oh well... I guess I'll have to start packing a USB mouse with me now... No biggie I guess...

Hey RP,

What kind of laptop is it? I have the same problem periodically on my Powerbook. I just tap it firmly a few times and all goes back to normal. Hope you get it fixed.
