Do you know when this year? The reason I ask is some parts/places are only open during the summer. Also, can you be more more specific on what you want to do?

When is up in the air. I imagine it would have to be june-july at the earliest, as we don't want there to be snow on the ground

as far as what she wants to do, alas, I cannot be more specific. You know women, she probably won't figure out what she wants to do until we haven't done it and are on our way back home.

Basically, I'm just looking for random suggestions I can throw at her to try to pin down a time and a better idea of what she's looking for.

I'll say one thing though, I ain't goin up there without doing some fishing...

My girl and I plan on going to Maine this summer. We will be going to Arcadia National Park. That's the Bar Harbor area. We plan on doing some hiking and camping. I haven't been to that area yet but it has been reccomneded.

Places I have been in Maine are Portland, specificly the Old Port area. Like beer? There are a bunch of brew pubs. I had a great time there, I think . My girls family has a gathering in the Sebago area. It's nice there, nice big lake, and..... well theres a lake there and it's not far from Old Port where the brew pubs are. I've also been to York. Nice beaches. It's a tourist are mostly. Oh, and the outlet stores in Kittery, right as you get into Maine on I95.

I don't think you'll have any problem finding some place cool to visit. There are plenty of places to fish.

Arcadia National park is beautiful. Make sure you visit Thunder hole and go to the top of Cadillac mountain. Also Bar harbor is a great place for lobster. From Bar harbor you can take a high speed ferry to Nova Scotia. Since I am from Ct and have been everywhere in New England some other great places in Maine depending on your length of visit are white water rafting in Me. I believe the Pebnobscot river is one of the top 5 in the country, but it is pretty far north in Maine. There is also the Dead River and the Kennebec rivers.
New Hampshire has Lake Winniepesuke, (sp), a great place to check out. Also there is Mt. Washington and a big national forest but I wont even attempt to spell it correctly. it something like conchopaugo or something like that. I know I just butchered that name.
Anyway, enjoy!

That High speed ferry from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth Nova-Scotia is a CAT, short for Catamaran, can carry 240 cars and 900 passengers. See here:

http://www.catferry.com/

Short drive from Yarmouth to Lunenburg to Halifax.

" In 1995, the World Heritage Committee, under the auspices of UNESCO, recognized Lunenburg's cultural and natural heritage by adding it to their World Heritage List. "

Taken from Lunenburg Web site: http://www.town.lunenburg.ns.ca/

Lots of nice places and things to do

For Nova Scotia tourism information call toll free in North America 1-800-565-0000 get your free vacation planning Kit or order from web site : http://www.novascotia.com/season/sum...ryourguide.htm

Anyway, hope to see you around

dont know if you go for this sort of thing, but the ll bean store (the first real one) is not a far drive from portland and might be worth the trip.

also spent a week on nova scotia many years back, and it was a real nice place to go. Lunenburg is beautiful, and you can check out the sick tides at the bay of fundee (sorry if thats spelled incorrectly)

Ok, gleamed a little more out of her today...

She wants to stick to the coast. Acadia looks to be our final destination, perhaps with many stops up the NE coast along the way.

The main thing(s) she's interested in are the small historic looking towns, lighthouses, little cottages and what not.

Being an avid angler and die hard photographer, I tend to agree with her their. Already got the go ahead to go fishing while she sits around and eats lobster.

OK, so now I just need to come up with a grand road trip plan, and figure out when to go. As far as weather goes, I'm assuming rain is extremely common anytime of the year. June would be the best time for me to go, need to do some more research on the fish runs, etc. though.

Thanks for all the help so far...

Got to agree with Lunenburg.
It is along what is called the 'Lighthouse Route'.
Beautiful and unspoiled.

I have people there.
I used to take the 'Scotia Prince' but for the same price you can ride the 'CAT' and save a day since you are going to Portland anyway. I drove around once thru Moncton, ouch! 2,000 miles from here!

Road Trip to Maine

I live in Southern New Hampshire on the Maine Border. If you want to do the coastal thing and Acadia is the destination with lighthouses ect. as one of the stops start with Portsmouth Newhampshire. You can work your way north from there with many coastal features and great stops. Take a look for New England Back Road Trip kinds of books. The one that I have is called New England Your Guide to Great Drives by Sign Post Guides. Here are some places to check out.

New Hampshire and Southern Maine Coast

Hampton Beach -Ultra Tourist
Portsmouth - Great Downtown (it is where I live)
Strawberry Bank Museum - Portsmouth
Isles of Shoals - Ferry from Portsmouth
Cape Ned**** Light House - This is Maine
Kennebunkport - Bush (family) Compound is here

Greater Portland Area
Portland Head Lighthouse
Freeport Maine - Home of LL Bean and other outlets

Mount Desert Island - This is Accadia National Park - Great Place
Bar Harbor

Stripers and Blues begin running from south to north about May or June. Lobster gets pletiful and pretty cheep about that time too.

Most harbors have some kind of charter or sportsfishing service.

Lake Winnepasauke is a great side trip if you have the time.

Have a great trip.

Forrest

If you wan't to avoid the rain just make sure that you go at a different time as us. Every time we take a vacation it rains. Last year we camped in Burlington VT. We had some time that it didn't rain but the highlight of the trip was the hike up Mt. Mansfield. It didn't actually rain on us but we could see rain and thunderstorms all around us. It was actually pretty cool.

Then we camped a few days on Cape Cod, Brewster to be specific. We did have some time there when it didn't rain but we found out at night in a down pour, that our new tent is a POS.

Maybe it's not actually us. I guess it could be coincidence.

BLANK21, Acadia (that's the correct spelling, not Arcadia, my girl has informed me) sounds great. Cadillac mountian is our highlight. I just hope that we get a clear enough day to get some good viewing. I'll check into your additional reccomendations, as inbred may also want to.

Inbred, if you wouldn't mind, keep us informed on what you find as far as things to do. We will be going in June or July.

I was born and raised in Bangor, Maine. Skipper has some excellent recommendations.

Although not near the coast, check out Mt. Washington in NH if you get a chance. It's billed as having the World's worst weather (in the winter).

My sister-in-law and her hubby are moving to NH, and my first question was '"How close are you going to be to Mt. Washington?"

Hey Inbred, make sure you drive up through Vermont and stop in the little town of Woodstock and spend some time just walking the streets and checking out the little shops. I don't remember what route it is on but the same road goes through Killington Vt.
We went that way in September when we drove up to Berlin , New Hampshire for my Nephews wedding. There is some really beautiful country up there....He and his wife were married at a place called the Spalding Inn on top of the White Mountains. All the out of town guests stayed there for the weekend. It is a 1940's style Inn. Nobody even bothered locking their room doors at night ..Really a great place. We were all looking for Larry, Daryl, and Daryl to come walking in.
I was also very impressed with the town of Saratoga Springs New York. Drove through there coming home at 5:30PM on a Sunday afternoon and by the people on the street in the middle of down town with all the stores open you would have thought it was Saturday afternoon.....We are going back soon.....All I remember is that we went up to Johnstown New York, turned NE and followed mostly 2 lane roads all the way through NY,VT, and NH...:
