Vonage phone service

I was just curious if anyone else had this service. I signed up for the basic package tonight which is 500 anytime minutes for $14.99. I do not have a home phone and the wife has been asking for one for a while. If 500 minutes is not enough, I can upgrade to unlimited minutes for $24.99/month. It seems to be a good deal.

Just wondering if anyone else had gone this route?

I am assuming this is for a cell phone? What's their coverage area like? I've never heard of them. Sounds like a small fish in a huge a$$ pond to me.

No, this is actually a home service that goes through my broadband connection. I have had cable internet and have been using strictly cell phones for talking. I wanted to get a home phone so that I could get Tivo service and because the wife has wanted one. I didn't want to pay a lot and this looked like a good option. I bought the starter kit at Sams Club when I returned a DVD player that I didn't need. The adapter plugs into my router and has a connection for a phone jack. It took about 5 minutes to get it all setup and I have all of the features of a land line for only 14.99/month.

It says you can choose any area code. If i live in NY and have a CA area code and i call CA is it a local call?

FYI - you're not going to get 911 tracing on a VOIP phone... ie, police/fire will not know where your house is if you call on an emergency....

If you were to buy the premium service for $24.99, you could call anywhere in the US for no charge and no long distance fee, unlimited. The $14.99/month service that I have only allows 500 minutes to anywhere in the US. We are going to see how many minutes we use and if we need the unlimited we will upgrade. There are no contracts to sign.

The kicker would be that you could have a CA area code and people in that prefix could call you as a local call.

Well, before I didn't even have a home phone at all, so there is no way that I could have dialed 911. I do have a cellphone also and I don't know if that 911 is the same. I hope that I don't have to dial 911, but if so I am now better off than I was before.
