Tool question (drill bits)

I got an awesome cordless DeWalt combo kit for xmas this year, and an extra 100$ to spend on anything else I might want to go with it. I was thinking one of the things I should definitely get are a nice set of drill bits.

My question is, who makes the most durable multi purpose drill bits out there? Or who should I stay away from?

Actually I picked up a nice set of DeWalt drill bits in a yellow plastic case from Home Depot. The bits are made in Germany and are very high quality. The double cut 'power point' tips will drill through hardened steel (such as chainsaw bars). I think they were $30-$40 for the set. I've had them about 4-5 years now.

Geez, $100 doesn't last me 5 minutes in Home Depot!

I got the same Dewalt drill bit set, and I really like the way they work.

you can also get a "drill doctor" to sharpen them. It works really well.

Paid $40 for a similar set of the DeWalt bits and have been
VERY pleased. I've found them to be very durable, plus
the plastic case keeps them in order.

I'll second this.

a little lower quality bit and a drill doctor will outlast the ultra premiums with no sharpener...

I got the 16 pc pilot point set...cost about $25. Work pretty good so far.

Will a drill doctor work on bits with a pilot point?

It works on any bit but it turns it to a regular point. you can get adapters to sharpen big bits and left handed bits.

Do yourself a big favor and get one of these Unibit kits if you plan on drilling any relatively thin material. IMO, that is one of the best inventions ever! I use mine around my vehicles a lot.

LIGHTNINROD

I got a set of 4 from the snap-on guy at work. on sale for $65.
They do work great drilling up to 1/2 thick material.
If you watch those bike building shows they use them all the time
