I don’t see it as kickbacks. Is this what people call when government provides opportunity for job growth? I guess the government just never wins when they are not creating jobs they suck and when they do create jobs they do it for kickbacks…

Anyway, I don’t think the breakdown lanes were ever intended to be used as a temporary repair facility. I think breakdown lanes are just that, somewhere a vehicle is parked, out of the way while it is “broke down” waiting for removal.

If freeways and highways had a lane intended to do repairs then why did they not call them “repair lanes” instead of breakdown lane?

GB Texas,
That's rather strange. Wonder if the state planner was also the look out for Pearl Harbor? J/K Seriousley though I have seen that happen in St. louis numerous times, and they have 8 lane highways with shoulders on each side of each direction. It's usally a backed up exit that causes that to happen there.

If freeways and highways had a lane intended to do repairs then why did they not call them “repair lanes” instead of breakdown lane?
I have always called them shoulders, I have never heard them refered to as a break down lane, Why not call them Pit Lanes? In Missouri it can not be a called "a lane" because it is against the law to drive on them. To answer the question though, it's probabley something along the line as the same reason people call trafic lights, "Stop Lights". Are they not also "Go Lights"? Also why the weatherman says theres a 50% chance for rain. Is that not also a 50% chance for sun? Our society is just so trained itself in a negative state of mind that we name things by worst case scenarios and we tend to always look at things from the negative side.

I drive the Houston freeways all day. This will fix one major problem, people that drive piece of shi!! trucks pulling a piece of shi! trailers overloaded and broken down in a moving lane of traffic. Maybe they might try to fix the vehicles before they get on a major freeway or just stay on the back streets. I'm not talking about 18wheelers thats another story.

I kinda agree with the post above. I can see both sides of the issue, but one thing that would probably improve is getting the dirtball vehicles off the roads because they are the ones most likely to break down. The deadbeats and dirtballs would probably not claim their vehicles and they would be sold off as junk. It would also allow the cops to check to see if they have insurance and a valid driver's license...things that most dirtballs don't have. all you'd have to do is require that towing places to see proof of insurance and valid driver's license before releasing the vehicle.

I once broke down on The interstate while test driving a program truck from a dealership! Wonder who would have paid that bill? I didn't buy that truck! I had drove it for 2 days and I was pulling a crappy wore out car dolly with it!
