So right after the new year I have decided to purchase a Sig Sauer P229 .40cal and the .357 conversion kit. The thing is I cant afford this thing new so I was looking into a Grade 1 factory refurb. Any opinions on this? Anyone know a good place to get one at a decent price?
Around here I found it for $700 with nightsights and 3 high cap mags with the Sig 1yr warranty.
Any opinions would be great as this is my first purchase.

I looked at Sigs before i bought my H&K.. It was a close call between them both. I paid 720 for my H&K Compac .40 with 2 mags at the show. Your price sounds pretty good to me. Nice choice in guns, too.
There a nice gun,I carry a 5906 Smith & Wesson 9 mm its about the same size as a p229..You didn't say what it was going to be used for.. Both of these guns are a little big for concealed carry, both good guns .I think the 9mm is a better shooting gun than the 40.
agree with cbal on 9mm being a better shooting gun, especially if your lower on funds. 9mm is pretty cheap to shoot. Thats very expensive for a used firearm. CDNN has em for 550 all day. The guys on sigforum are quite happy with them. Check out CDNN and download the catalog. Tons of guns at great prices. Also might wanna take a look at Sig forum Hope that helps.
Any SIG is hard to beat new or used,Unless you have a Glock.J/K,I own a SIG P220 and three soon to be four Glocks and as far as used SIG's I would assume that the factory approved ones will be youre best bet.
Heres my collection.

As far as 9mm being a good round for self defense I would diagree.I have a G17 that I just bought stricktly for shooting at the range. At the range the light recoil is very pleasant on youre hands and accuracy, but I wouldnt carry it over my 23 or my 27 which are both .40S&W.Some think the .40 has too much recoil,But what you lose in feel is made up in pure knock down power. And my SIG (.45) stays in the house mainly until I get my G37 which is a new caliper=.45 GAP,I think SIG is a good bet if you dont like the glocks,H&K? I'm not really fond on them as they seem to be to big for a plastic frame.IMO
best self defense round is the one that you can accurately fire into the bad guy. 9mm is pretty easy to fire accurately and its cheap to practice with unless you reload your .40/.357(most dont). The +p rounds for 9 make it a more formidable caliber as well. A .22 will stop a badguy if u shoot him in the head. I challenge anyone that doesnt think so to step in front of the .22 i have and we can test it out.
If your talking home defense you shoudnt even be mentioning the word handgun. Thats where the shotgun comes into play. Maybe handgun as a backup on your person.

Kimber,Tuarus, and Springfeild are all great guns,But two of them are limited on capacity(5-8 Shots only),And the tuarus is just a mock up up of the Glock. If you look at the models they offer you are eighter buying a glock or a berretta in a simular package, and sometimes paying a little more for the original idea is a better idea. The ONLY feature Tuarus has is their key lock, but you can now buy Glocks with an internal safety locking mechanism so There goes that advantage.
Concerning caliper,I would rather shoot a intruder once and stop him dead in his tracks rather than hope I can place my shot in the middle of the night or in a high stress invirement with a .380 or a 9mm.Sure its all about shot placement,But...shot once and end fight(save youre life and anyone elses in youre houshold) or shot once and hope you got it right?I'll stick with a bigger load.As I said I love my 9mm Glock 17 I just bought for the range but I've also got my .40s&w and .45auto controlability down pat.And yes 9mm is a blast to shoot!
Just about any pistol caliber round that's chambered in a sensible semi auto (no, not a Desert Eagle) is woefully underpowered. Pistols are for fighting your way out of the situation you're in and/or to fight your way to a rifle. And modern 9mm defense ammo works just fine.
That being said, I carry a Colt 1991A1 NRM Commander in .45 auto. There's nothing wrong with 9mm, and as vvyk3d says, anything that you can put onto target accurately is good. 9mm is cheap, cheap ammo means lots of practice, lots of practice means better accuracy, and accuracy rules.
Back to the matter at hand, I think if you shop around hard enough, you could probably find a new P229 for somewhere around $700. That seems kinda stiff for a factory refurb.

Kinda hard to conceal during my daily beat though.
I just saw...
This is gonna be your first handgun? Honestly, I'd buy a good .22 and start from there. A brick of .22 costs $10 from Wal-Mart for 550 rounds; 50 rounds of cheap .40 S&W is about $19, if I remember right. 20 rounds of good .40 S&W is about $20. And 357 SIG costs more. If you're dead set on getting a centerfire caliber for starters, then I'd highly recommend 9mm. It's cheap compared to .40 and especially 357 SIG, muzzle flash and recoil are less, its easier to find (again especially compared to 357 SIG) and in modern loadings with bullets like Speer's Gold Dot or Remington's Golden Saber, it makes a fine defensive load.
