Lets talk about the BCS

I'm more of an NFL/ DIII College Football person myself, but if there is one thing about DIA college football that gets me fired up, its the anual BCS debacle. How can you go 12-0, win the SEC (the SEC!) and not even have a shot at the national championship. I'm not taking anything away from Oklahoma and USC, but Auburn got the shaft. I hate the BCS, its worthless and most of the bowl games are trash to watch anyway. I say that they need AT LEAST a 4 team playoff to have a legit national champion. Thats one of the things I love about DIII football is that the NCAA playoffs are cutthroat to get into and the games are usually great to watch. Any thoughts guys?

The BCS is on its what 4th revision, and still follows basicly the same useless formula. Unfortunetly as long as the networks keep paying them big bucks for the bowls little will change and since Fox has bought almost all rights to air the bowl games till 09 not much will change.
I fully agree that a play off system is what is need to determind the national champs, but as long as BCS is in charge you aint going to see it..

Sled...

I hope they get rid of the BCS and just move to a playoff schedule (although I doubt that will happen anytime soon). When you have this many teams that are undefeated, the BCS just doesnt cut it IMO to determine the best team.

I'm a Cal alum, but even before this year's debacle I have had BIG issues with the BCS.

When it started seven years ago, I was really annoyed about tampering with the tradition of the Rose Bowl. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Secondly, west coast teams traditionally get the shaft in the polls due to an east coast dominated media. If you are a fan of the Pac 10 and other west coast football, you know what I mean.

Third, there is HUGE opportunity for coaches to mess with the final rankings.

Example: Six coaches reportedly dropped Cal to 7th or 8th in their final poll. Gee, do ya think those coaches might have been Big 12 coaches, whose conference will get $4.5 million from Texas being in a BCS bowl? BTW, the coaches poll does an investigation if any team drops more than 4 spots on an indiividual coach's ballot after a win. I guess the coaches know how the system works, because nobody dropped Cal by more than 4 spots. They may be unethical, but those guys are smart and they know which side their bread is buttered on.

Cal got screwed this year. In the last two minutes of their final game, Cal had a TD called back on a BAD call. In all likelihood, if they had beat Southern Miss by 17 instead of 10 points, they would be in the Rose Bowl, yet the Cal coach still had the integrity to take a knee as the clock expired.

So Cal can't go to the Rose Bowl, but Pitt can get into the BCS? I know it's the way it is set up, but WTF? That is f'n STUPID.

IMO, there is no more Rose Bowl. This was the final nail in the coffin. They should just give the 'Rose Bowl' name a dignified burial and replace it with some new bowl named after whoever will pony up the most $. Texas in the Rose Bowl when there is e a 10-1 Pac team that is ranked higher in both polls? Puhleaze. That scenario should be unimagineable.

After 7 years of BCS, I am convinced a playoff is the only way. They can tinker and adjsuted the BCS all they want, but it is rarely if ever going to work.

Yeah, that Cal thing was shady as hell. I figure they could still have a bunch of bowl games, just use them as quarterfinals, semi finals, finals, etc... In the end, they televise probably almost as much football and we get to see who can beat who. I think a 16 team play off (no first round byes) would work great. Who is to say that the #10 ranked team can't pull a few upsets and beat the #2 seed for the national championship. They can use their stupid formulas to seed the teams, but their really needs to be a playoff.

I would support a 16 team play off. Top eight would be fine, too. Or take 12 teams and give the top 4 a bye, while #5 thru #12 slug it out in the first round.

Just as long as we scrap the BCS ASAP I'll be happy.
