I don't know about hippies but that sounds like vintage trailer trash to me... Actually I'll bet he wanted to heat up the wax in the lava lamp faster than the bulb in the lamp was doing it (it can take a while to get a lava lamp to look right) so he tried the stove.

NOTE: just b/c you live in a trailer does not mean you are trash, but there certainly is a large percentage of ignorant, moronic trash (like those who heat a lava lamp on the stove) in the parks.

They are sealed bottles filled with oil and a wax type liquid, once heated and expanding, it had no where to go but out. I am suprised the cap on it didnt burst first, but man that sucks.
