oops....

I just got back form the grocery store.....one of my items is an 18 pound bag of dog food. It's on the little conveyor belt, and I notice the cashier is struggling with it, trying to get it to trigger the bar code scanner.
I say: "you need a hand?".....

She gets all defensive and says she can get it.

At this point, I notice her right arm is just hanging straight down by her side, and she is just using her left hand and arm to manipulate the bag of dog food.

Then I notice she doesn't have a right hand at all. Amputated about the middle of the forearm.

I really need to pay more attention to my surroundings, I guess.

I was too embarrassed to say anything else at that point.

It's not your fault she's having trouble adjusting. I'd have offered to help even if I knew she only had one hand. You didn't take her hand, did you?

I would absolutley offer help, if I could do it again. Just wish I had used a different phrase, thats all. I was kidding about not going back, but honestly, I probably won't go back in her check-out line. Too akward now.

LOL

Man, it's funny and it's not, bleh, ya its funny.
I wouldve offered to help also.
I don't think its an attack at anyone (disability or not) to offer to help a lending hand given the situation.

I play poker with a dude in a wheel chair and hes cool, he doesnt turn into a defensive ****, as a matter of fact, he asks for help all the time.

Some people are cool, and others take it to the extreme sometimes and are uptight.

Roll with it is all you can do.

I say you did the right thing, and I would still continue to shop there.

She might not be as handicapped as you think. No Lie, I've been beaten @ golf by a Guy with one arm. He doesnt hit it very far ( 150-180 yards Max) but its straight and his Short game (putting) is very good. I shot a 93 he shot a 91.
