Wireless Internet Access for PC

I want to move my home PC into a room that doesn’t have a phone jack. I don’t want to string phone cable because of the distance and don’t want cable passing main walkways. I have heard of products that attach to a phone jack and using an antenna or other device, allows you to have Internet access. Do any of you guys know of such products? Anyone tried them? Recommendations?

Thanks!

So....old-school modem, skipping broadband, and jumping to wireless. Interesting. Good luck.

Yeah... never seen a modem shared via a hub/switch/wireless...

Unless he sets up one PC with the modem, internet connection sharing, and two wireless cards in an ad-hoc wireless network.. that would work.

Why you'd do it is beyond me. Spring the $40/mo for broadband my man!!

My sister recently got Yahoo DLS for $29/month for 6 months, then it goes up to $34/month.

You can buy a wireless gateway that will dial a number and give you wireless access to the slow *** dial up acount

Lucent made one - It was called the 1000 I think - I have one somewhere.

Here is link

Home phone wiring is one of the easiest things to do - Its 2 wires - tip and ring - do it the way the phone co does, extend the wires from a nearby room around the outside of the house and just drill a hole from the outside.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I really don’t need any additional phone expenses right now so I have opted not to get the DSL. I know I’m a cheapo, but with four kids at home money is tight. Heck it took me four months to allocate the funds for Hoss’ new tires. All I could find at Circuit City and others is a Server option. Then I would have to purchase some type of card to install into the PC. Way too much $$ for all of that. Looks like the computer will stay where it is at for now.

Which kid do you love the least? Kick 'em out - there's your cable modem. Wait a couple weeks, kick the next kid you love the least out. That's your SuperChips tuner. Next two weeks... see the pattern?

Or you could do what Dzervit does and start selling crack on the side. OH! And pimp your wife!

It works well for me since I'm in an envirenment that promotes pimpin' and slingin' crack rock. I doubt he'd have the same good fortune as me in Cheyenne, WY!

I'd stick with my kick the kids out plan...

Can you tell me if Bryan/College Station will be getting faster speeds (for existing customers)?

Back in Dallas we had Comcast and they upgraded everyone to 3Mbps...come down here and Im lucky to get 1.

Also, look into 2wire systems. They have nice PC ports that you just plug in, plus, they're just wireless routers, and if you have a wireless NIC, they seem to work very well. Oh, yeah, and don't even worry about it unless you can get broadband.
