Hey my hats off to you for being able to just walk. I have a family to feed so I can’t or believe me I would. I wish you luck bud!
Hey Eddy, I’m going to miss you too man!
Beers to both of you!

I'd never-ever-EVER quit a job without having another one lined up-
Comapnies routinely DON'T HIRE from November- January because they're going towards year-end, and they haven't gotten budgets approved for the next year- so, the best shot at a new job won't be until February. Again, that's the norm-
There's always seasonal work at Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Target, etc.. I don't what kind of salary you'll need to replace.
Anyhoo, that's my $0.02.
If you're in a financial position to just quit- and not get hurt in the process; you have nothing to lose....
Sometimes, golden handcuffs will keep you in place. Just remember- you can't make anyone hire you- finding a good job (career) is:
70% Timing: If there's a hiring freeze, you're just stuck.
10% Qualifications: Having what they need. (CCNA, CCIE, PMP, MCSE)
20% Knowing somebody: This gets your foot in the door, and will get your resume' looked at; and- depending on the character of the person recommending you- this 20% could supercede the other 80% that everyone else needs.

Depends on where you are looking for work. I know from a govt perspective that November - Jan is the HIGHEST hire rate of the year because of the end of the fiscal year and contracts are up for renewal. Peak govt time!
Yup.. the whole Nov-Jan thing is a sham. Most companies FISCAL year-ends do not match the calender year, thus makeing the whole budget/hiring freeze bogus.
Usually those months are slower as everyone is scrambling to get their vacation time in, and many key folks are not in the office to interview blah blah blah...
IMHO, there is no bad time of the year to find a job. It all depends on how hard you want to look.

And, it depends on what you're looking for.
If you're in technology/telecom- you can hang it up; unless you're a VoIP guru. Otherwise, jobs are onesie-twosie.
I got hired in December by GTE; but that was after two other "potentials" hit me with a negotiation delay due to hiring freezes (Sprint and AT&T Outbound). Sprint called me back in Feb. offering me a job, but that job was paying $12,000/year less than the job I had recently gotten (And it was essentially the same job- working on DMS-100 and SL-100 switches remotely in a NCC, (Network Control Center).
I'm higher in the food chain now, and I can tell you- there aren't many- if any hires for permanent positions... Now contractors, that's a different story.

If you quit, you'll get zero unemployment.
Ask for a leave on mental medical grounds, do this, don't just quit. After a month or so, see if you're better, then go back to work.
If you need any HR/rules/options help, just let us know.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I took a medical leave of absence and got some counseling from early September through about 3 weeks ago. Things are worse now at work. During my time out, I was able to sit back and take a deep look at what I was doing, where I was heading, and how I was going to get there. Sounds cliche I know, but it really helped.
I have tried everything and I can't fix anything at work. I am done. This has been going on for about a year. It has started to affect my personal life, and I can't continue to be unhappy.
I realize that I will make a better candidate for employment if I have a job while I am looking, but it's just not fair to my company to keep going on like this.
Hey Green-
I currently handle auto claims for an insurance company. I have been there 4 years. I took this job right out of college.

Tuff:
While I can't really offer a solid piece of advice, I can tell you that I can relate to what you're going through. I, too, am pretty burned out and have been testing various bodies of water around the state to see if there could be a potential match for another position elsewhere. So far, the market is pretty tough and thus, I'm not sure what's going to happen. While I've had a couple of bites, none seem to be running with the lure at this point.
All I can tell you is good luck in your decision. I've always thought that your witty, well-thought out responses fit this site very well. We know you're an ***--et to us here and I, for one, will do anything I can to help you out. You know how to find me.

hey Tuff if you want to live in an economically depressed craphole and want to work in science I know some people who want lab techs... Oh wait, thats what I do and it sucks, never mind. I tired the waters recently but the few local biotech places were not hiring. It's hard to cope when your job just sucks the will to live out of you. Every morning I consider calling in sick for a few minutes and I pause outside the door to the lab and think about how much I don't want to deal with this crap. Stupid gainful employment, if I didn't think Burt would track me down and kill me I would just get on welfare.
Hey Slim I liked your analogy. Just how I feel about mine. I take solace there are more people than just I out there that feel the same way. Life can be just like one big S**t sandwich, and we all have to take a bite
I can relate... I work in IT, and have enjoyed all I can stand aswell... I'm ready for a new career, but have no idea exactly what I want to do. About the only career I can think of that would be fun to do for the rest of my life would be flying planes.... But it's not exactly the best time to hop into the aviation industry. Anyone have a job you love and can't wait to get to everyday? If so what are you doing???
Tuff,
I know where your coming from, exactly in the same boat. My last day is 3 December, bailing a good paying job, great benifets all that stuff, but just can't go on anymore, best for me and the company. Wish you the best of luck in the future, the way i see it is my health is more important right now.
