windshield breaking tool ?

okay, this might sound nutty, but here i go.

i am looking into getting a device to keep in my truck, and another for the wife's car (in the glove box). i want to get something i could use to break out the windshield or window in case of an emergency.

i have seen a device thats a combo seatbelt cutter/hammer for this. i have also seen windshields broken rather easily with a spring loaded center punch.

i like the idea of the punch since you wouldnt neccessarily need a good swinging angle to break the glass. i would think that with the punch as long as you can touch the glass, you would be able to shatter it.

i am curious to see what anyone here might use, or have experience with (and where they purchased it). i have seen cars go up in flames and it would be nice to have something like this to maybe get me, or someone else out of a possible bad situation.

I would go with a spring loaded center punch from HD or Lowes.

Cheap and from some reports I have seen work better than those escape tools. It one of those things that you never really know how it performs because you hopefully never use it.

Go for the center punch thing and remember than to break tempered safety glass more easily put the punch as close as possible to the edge of the window, it will break much easier from the edge.

If ever in this situation go for a side window because there's no chance in hell your going out thru the windshield.

I use a window punch semi-regularly. Use it on the side windows (not the windshield). I don't know if they come with instructions.

But what I find that works is putting the punch on the window lettering in the cornor (where it has the label/markings). Also put the punch onto the glass and lean. Don't hammer it to the glass.

Also if you buy one, take it to a local wreckers (or Dodge dealership-j/k) and give it a whirl, to see how it works. Better to know now, then when you need it.

Windhsield - SOL (Sheet outta luck)

That "Life hammer", *cough* gay/junk, ha ha..
will NOT work on the windshield, it is laminated glass. For this task you will need some sort of saw to cut through the glass/laminate, this will not loikely fit on your glovebox.

The good ole life hammer would work on the side windows of your truck, as it is Tempered glass and meat to shatter. As someone else mentioned earlier, you will need to strike it in the corner, where it is weakest for it to break.

I would recommend getting a regular old center punch from a hardware store and using it.

The chances of you coming into this life or death situation or pretty slim to none, but hey, if this makes you feel better, have at it.

Now you I am assuming drive an F-150, not sure what kind of car your wife has, but if it is a "high-end" "Bling-Bling" car, it may have Lexan glass, now you're really screwed, if this is the case, invest in a hole saw and a DeWalt recip. saw, you will need to this to get through Lexan, it can be found in every "window" in the car.

Hope this helps...

Happy motoring...
