Lotto (good-bad) thoughts
A voluntary tax is the best tax. Lotto is a voluntary tax. As long as the state doesn't do what some have done in the past and lower the amount of money allocated to the schools out of the general fund by the same amount as approroated to the schools from the Lotto tax.
Lottos rule. While they can generate a TON of cash, the hard part is making sure the schools actually SEE the money... those bastards in the capital will swipe it faster than you can say slush fund.
I honestly can't remember when the lottery was brought on board here in Kentucky but, they pushed it with the 'school's will benefit' theme as well.
I can tell you that, while schools may have benefited a tiny bit, they continue to fall behind and continue to see cuts that were occuring prior to the addition of the lottery. My mom, step-mother, and wife are all teachers so, I see this on nearly a daily basis...
Maybe OK would be a different scenario but, speaking on behalf of the children and teenagers within the Kentucky Public School system, they continue to fall behind...

Well, north carolina does not have a lotto, but the education system here couldn't be any worse if we did get one. Any little bit would help I guess. However, I do not foresee us ever getting one with the whole "bible belt" thing.
The roads suck down here too. All of our neighboring states have a lotto and when you drive from those states into NC, you know it.

We have finally found a way to tax stupidity and it's not a flat tax.
(the more stupid you are the more you pay)

We have the lotto in Mi with all the funds going to education
.
But it is more like what RP said, they are fallin behind and they have taken away other sources of funding because of it.
We need some serious education reform, but it needs to start at the administative level first becuase that is where the biggest waste seems to be.
A school with roughly 700 studends shouldnt have a super that is making $110 a year.
Sled...

amen to that, although an administrators job is tuff, the teachers dont see nearly the salary they deserve. The school my GF teaches at passed a referendum to build an addition to the school and a new cafeteria with no problem. Guess which referendum didnt pass...the one to hire more teachers to fill the building they are gonna build. Smart stuff happening there. Hopefully it passes and they dont have to start axing more teachers. Reform needs to come from some kind of 3rd party unbiased agency, and not that no child left behind crap, dont even get me started on that.
Hey Rockpick hows life as the spouse of a teacher, interesting isnt it? Do you get a stack of papers, a marker and get ordered to grade like i do?

She loves her job and I honestly think she'd do it for less money (do NOT tell anyone I said that) but, I see her increasing frustration on a daily basis. There's a good chance that she may migrate to music education in the very near future once she's achieved tenure (which is this year).

Totally kidding. My mom teaches and loves it too. She actually left the school system to spend time with me and my sisters growing up. After we moved out, she went back because she was bored.
The lottery is good.
Casinos are another story.
The nice thing to be married to a teacher:
I get to drive my 4X4 truck to work cause it's closest = less gas
So when there is a snow storm and she would NEED a 4X4, Ha! School is closed
But I do sympathize with all you married to teachers out there, Have you ever been to a get together for all the teachers. They spend all day at school, get home and babble all supper long about school, and then get to the party and talk to other teachers all night about... you guessed it...

they say the money generated by the Lottery will be used for Education Purposes. They way I see it is the people that spend the money on the Lottery on a continual basis will be the ones that are already getting differnt things for school. They are the ones that get free lunches, cant afford clothing and school supplies for the kids, and are spending what they could save and invest into the kids and using that money on the lottery. I know the education system needs the money, but they should not depend on the Lottery system, they should reform how they spend the current money. Doing away with Welfare and farmers subsidies (sp?) would be a great example, use all that money to lower taxes and fund the education system.
There's a propsal on Michigan's ballots as to whether they should put all gambling decisions to the voters or let the State decide it all. The people against the proposal (the governor mainly) say that if the voters get to choose all gambling then the school system will end up loosing money. They say its a ploy by the Indian Casinos so they can keep a monolpoy (which I don't see since we have 3 non-Indian casinos in metro Detroit alone).
Another proposal on the ballot is to decide if the Detroit school board should be taken over by elected teachers as opposed to appointed business people (they are appointed by the mayor). I think it is a great idea to have the people choose who's running the school system, especially when you can vote them out later if they don't do their job. Unfortunately I don't think I can vote on this since I'm not a Detroit resident.
