An infuriating trip to Best Buy (topic = cell phones)
Ok, so I've been holding off for about a year in replacing my cellphone. Not that I am unhappy with it, but my current Motorola V60t does not use the latest "GSM' technology, so the newest pricing plans are not available to me.
I've held off until Motorola released their newest SmartPhone, the MPx220. BestBuy has just started distributing it nationwide with Cingular (whom I've been with since before their merger with SBC, when they were still known as BellSouth Mobility, that's 8+ years).
The price at BestBuy is attractive. $349, minus $100 mail-in rebate. That's with a two-year contract with Cingular.
BUT WAIT! The price of $249 is only for NEW customers.
LOYAL CUSTOMERS, like myself, pay the full price of $349 plus a $150 "up charge." That's twice as much!
Well, at least I know what I have to do. Wait until AT&T Wireless has this phone available, switch to them and bring my number with me and tell Cingular to go "F" themselves once and for all...until the merger with AT&T Wireless is complete, that is.

I have the Motorola V60t.
Having trouble charging the battery but, I've held off replacing it because my Plan expires next month.
Then I'll be in the market.
From your post I guess it is the end for this phone which is a shame because I have about 70 numbers in it and it has served me well.
(and what's with the mis-leading thread title? Or is Best Buy in any way culpable in this?)

i'm with verizon and will be getting rid of my motorola T720. two months before the contract runs out you can renew and get the phone at the special price or better. they will give me $200 towards my next phone. i have no problems with verizon.
I've gotten the same BS when I go to upgrade my Nextel from time to time.
I respond "So I'll cancel right now, then renew. That makes me a NEW customer."
The salespuke: "uhhh... you can't do that"
"Sure I can"
SP: "But you won't be a new customer"
"Look skippy. I cancel my service right now. That means I'm not a Nextel/verizon/whoever customer. Then I purchase a new phone and sign up... and since I'm not currently a customer, that makes me new. Get it?"
SP: "Uhhh... <drooling>"
"So, why don't you just give the flippen deal and I'll sign the contract to stay on for another year or two.. whatever it says. That way they guarentee they get the contract they want a new customer to sign."
SP: "Uhh.. I have to talk with my supervisor"
"You do that"
You may have to repeat this logic to the boss, but most of the time they have a bit more intelligence than a gnat.
I've always walked out with the sale price and a new phone...
Good luck to you.

Sold my equipment to the cable company; and, I now have better service all the way around. Plus I got money for equipment I never had to pay for in the first place.

To try and wrangle this thread back to the topic...
I have recently been dealing with the same thing. It ticks me off that some random Joe off the street will get a better deal than me, a 5 year customer. I have decided to play their game.
Check out these two sites:
www.point.com
and
www.a1wireless.com
A buddy told me about point.com when I was helping my g/f get a new phone. I also gave the info to 3 of my buddies. I can tell you that it worked without a hitch. Of course, you have to change providers, but who the hell cares, right? I mean seriously, if customer loyalty means nothing to them, why should it to us?
You can get some killer deals on phones at both of these sites, AND keep your number. Everything is done through the mail. It is so simple it almost seems illegal.
The only problem with a1wireless is that their customer support center is over in India somewhere. BUT, after you talk to them, get your phone and switch providers, you don't have to deal with them again...you'll be dealing with your new provider.
Hope this helps

Whoa, Cingular has a policy to offer the same deals to its present customers. Best buy is not a Cingular store, but an authoized dealer. Call Cingular customer service and ask if you are eligible for an upgrade. They will give you the same deal.
Just explain what you want, be advised you may get a twit who doesn't know what they are talking about, just call and talk to someone else.
