Computer question: Processor or Ram?

i'm trying to play Doom 3 (i can barely run it on the lowest settings with some tweaking) and some other rather demanding games on my PC and am looking to make an upgrade to the aging machine. i'm curious what will give me the most result in gaming.

what i've got now:

Intel Celeron 1.8ghz
384mb DDR SDRAM (a 128 and a 256)
GeForce 64mb graphics card

my options (the ones that i'm deciding between):

Intel Celeron 2.8ghz
-or-
512mb RAM (i'd replace my 128 to give me 768mb total)

thanks for all of the help, cause i have no clue what would make the biggest difference.

The ram would help, but you need a bigger & badder graphics card as well. The video card would be the best performance increase.... and the most costly.

Video card would be the best improvement.

Then I'd go for RAM.

Then I'd get rid of the Celeron, and not for a faster Celeron.

I agree....a video card will be a big boost followed next by a faster processor.

My video card alone has 256MB....

Doom3 still runs rather slow on my box with all the eye candy on.

1280x1024 4xAA

P4 2.5 GHz
1GB RamBUS Memory
BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC

Quit spending money on the truck mods and get a better box

Im currently building me a new computer. Right now I have a Abit AV8 Socket 939 motherboard and AMD Athlon 64 3500+ on order(these should be here today). I already have the case, DVD drive, and 160 GB hard drive. If money holds up I plan on getting the GeForce 6800 Ultra video card.

This is my first time building my own computer so I hope I don't screw anything up. This stuff is pricey.

first thanks for all of the replies,
i definitely understand that a video card would be the best mod...but like someone else said also the most costly. i can get either one of those things i listed for $70 so i was just curious which would give me the best boost. oh and i agree a little less truck would mean more computer...but you gotta keep your priorities straight

Between the two options you listed... the RAM would the choice to make. Go for a cool GB if you can swing it. Then start saving for that video card.... it will make a WORLD of difference.
