Need Opinion on fuel efficient commuter car
J, please run away from those tin-cans on wheels. I know I'd be happier in a bigger, roomier, heavier sedan that gets 25-30mpg than be a sitting duck in a tiny death trap that gets 40-50mpg.
If your driving that much, shouldn't comfort & saftey be a big part of the decision?!

I commute 30 miles each way on the worst, most notorious highways, just outside of Boston. I can't even count all the rear-end collisions, chain accidents, I've seen within the past two years.
The most dramatic was last January, when sudden hard braking resulted in a 4dr. Honda Civic getting flipped one car length away from me. I had to hold the woman upside down in her seat while others came and unlatched her seatbelt.
Would an F-150 have flipped given the same dynamics? Nope.
D's point is an extremely valid one.

very good points. I suppose I'm a little too fixated on fuel consumption given the mileage Im about to undertake for this new job. And Ive been thinking cheap-a$$ car as it will be so high mileage after 6 years that it wont be worth anything so Im treating the purchase as a disposable vehicle.
Man, I wish they still sold million mile Volvos (like the 240) safe, cheap and last forever.
