A Billion

A few interesting facts
Next time you hear a politician use the words "billion" casually,
think about whether you want that politician spending your tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising
agency did a good job of putting that figure into perspective in one of
its
releases:

A billion seconds ago, it was 1959.
A billion minutes ago, Jesus was alive.
A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate
Washington spends it

The Democrats are complaining on how long the war is taking but
consider this:

It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the
Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.
It took less time to find Saddam's sons in Iraq than it took Hillary
Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.
It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to
destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to
call the police after his Oldsmobile sunk at Chappaquid****.
It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in
Florida!!!!!!

Our military is GREAT !

Yes our military is the strongest most capable force on the planet and we (the American taxpayers) pay for it in BILLIONS every year. The sad part is that not even a fraction of it goes to the enlisted people who get payed below the poverty line for most states.

This current war in Iraq will cost the American Taxpayers Billions if not Trillions of dollars over the next 10 years it has been projected by numerous economic analysts. It doesnt matter if your Liberal/Conservative or Democrat or Republican at some point we ALL have to belly up to that bar and pay that tab.

I dont think just DEMOCRATS are starting to complain/wonder at how long the war in Iraq will take to clear up and for our troops to come home. I think many Republicans are questioning policies of the current administration as well just not as vocally as the extremist left AKA "Liberals".

It is our duty as Americans to question what the current plan is for Iraq. Those poor young American men and women over there are walking targets. I had the luxury of not being a walking target in Desert Shield/Storm, we were in and we were out pretty quickly and we didnt have to occupy a hostile territory for any length of time. Yes we killled hundreds of thousands but we didnt have to stick around to clean it all up.

Questioning our government is not only our right but it is our duty as citizens of this great country regardless of what administration is inside the oval office. The problem lies in which side of the fence you sit on these days. Too often people mix and blur political agendas instead of doing what is right for the nation as a whole and that to me is Un-American. When people continously put forth thier own wants and needs above what is good for our country.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, most of America does not remember the sacrifices that our Great Grandfathers and Grandfathers made during World War II. It is easier for the American Psyche to let go of trauma and move on then to remember the pain of Viet-Nam or the pain of 9/11.

We are a short-termed memory society where quick snappy 60 second commercial jingles are the only real thing that sticks in most peoples memories for any length of time. We have become accustomed to quick clean wars where are beautiful well engineered smart bombs go through front doors and windows.

Noone wants to know the real stories of the smells of war of the burning of bodies the acrid smell of burning flesh and oil mixed with gunpowder. Noone wants to see or hear about the orphans or the mothers holding thier dead children as thier brothers watch soldiers drive by.

Noone wants to remember or know about shell shocked soldiers coming home who wake up in the middle of the night screaming trying to save buddies long gone from incoming artillery fire regardless of friendly fire or no. Noone wants to remember or talk to the soldiers who took lives of people they didnt even know. Those are the things that will come back to haunt you as years go by with age you attempt to let it go but memory for those chosen few will always be there.

I am a veteran that fought in a war its the chosen few that pick up arms and go voluntarily that I worry about at times like these. We train them we tell them they must go but when it is all said and done we are way to quick to forget them and push them aside. We are quick to take thier benefits and close down VA hospitals to say we didnt have to raise taxes.

I will remember them regardless of what side of the fence you or I are on.

At least now that we have President Bush in office the military budget and Veterans Affairs is no longer being cutted and gutted as it was under Clinton. Now with President Bush he has put more money into the military budget and Veterans Affairs…

I do agree that Clinton was a very sad President for screwing the military and Veterans when they needed assistance.

Anyway America has a TON of cash, PLENTY of cash to pay for this war so that should not be the debate. The debate needs to center around what socialist programs need to be cut and gutted to pay for what the United States Constitution states is the federal government’s responsibility which is the defense of America. The Constitution makes no mention of socialist programs.

As war stated we need to remember the sacrifices made during WWII so lets completely get rid of all socialist liberal programs that were not around then and we will have plenty of money to fight this war correctly and still be able to have bigger tax cuts…

It’s a win-win situation…

This war is a MUST while socialist programs are nice and make people feel good but they are NOT a must, time to get our priorities straight while we still have the time to do so…

nah....even after the elections the side that didnt win is gonna complain and the side that won is gonna rub in. Its a lose-lose when u discuss politics in a public forum. It does need to stop tho...it is getting a bit crazy.

Check this out. This is interesting. It takes the measurement of dollars and stacks them to see how much a billion is....

snopes says.....
A billion seconds: One billion seconds is about 31.7 years, so going back in time a billion seconds would put us in 1972. (The discrepancy in the version cited above, which puts the year at 1959, might have come about because this piece was written or last updated in 1990.)

A billion minutes: One billion minutes is approximately 1901 years, so travelling back to a time a billion minutes ago would land us in the year A.D. 102. This date is about seventy years too late to encompass the life of Jesus, according to traditional accounts. (Perhaps the discrepancy of several decades is an indication that this piece originated back in the 1930s.)

A billion hours: One billion hours ago represents a time a bit over 114,000 years in the past, an era generally classified as the Palaeolithic or "Old Stone Age."

A billion dollars ago: If the U.S. federal government were spending a billion dollars every 8 hours and 20 minutes, its total yearly expenditure would be a little more than $1 trillion. The last few years, the budgets approved by Congress have been about double that amount, or $2 trillion per year.
