Any Landscapers here?

I need some ideas for how to 'bling bling' the front yard, but I'm too cheap and poor to hire someone, so how about helpin' Habibi out, LOL

If anyone is on this board has some knowledge, let me know and then I'll post some "before" photos.

Thanlks

I own a shovel. I mow my own lawn. I know a thick layer of GOOD mulch makes nearly anything pretty and keeps the weeds away. Brick pavers & blocks are hella-cool. Plant slow growing trees & bushes. Scott's Weed & Feed fertalizer only feeds the weeds. Ortho weed-b-gone is the real deal. Stinks, but it works like a champ. Outdoor lighting rocks as well, although I don't have.

How's that for help buddy? Are the idea just popping into your head now?

Time to bring back a pic from the past on how to make the outside of your house the best on the block:

Pink Flamingos

Your classic Lawn Jockey

and of course, Garden Gnomes

Will make your house stand out and the neighbors will love you!

Oh yeah . . . use Astroturff for the lawn. Always impressive.

Kobiashi,

Those are some great ideas, but I think Habibi might prefer something along this style:

What is the look you're going after...tacky or tasteful?

Tacky is easy: go with the pink flamingos or hundreds of plaster chickens, rodents (squirrels, bunnies, chipmunks), or statues.

For tasteful, you need to have a plan...which means assessing your "environment." How your house "relates" to your property is the thing...and a science. You might be better off getting a pro to do this and come up with a plan, then you can implement it yourself. Or, take classes at a nursery or school. Learn about trees and shrubs...it is a process that takes time. But, it is very satisfying.

One thing I would go for is to use ground cover as much as possible to minimize the size of the lawn you need to mow and to make mowing easier by avoiding having to get too close to your house, trees or other features...eliminate as much "trimming" work as possible.

Low voltage lighting is also neat to do.

Watch some of the shows on HGTV and DIYTV.

Have fun.

Must-haves for any yard are the;

*tires turned inside-out, jagged-cut edge, white-painted planters
*painted plywood kid peeing
*painted plywood woman that's bent-over
*cement Mexican w/donkey and cart
*front porch goose w/clothing
and by all means...
*Madonna of the bathtub ( Madonnas of the urinal are better, but harder to find)

These are big in the States..Don't know about the Great White North.

OK, I wasn't going to let this out, but if you want the ultimate yard "sculpture," AND advertise that you're a motorhead, here's the recipe:

Take one old bare V8 engine block (no heads) (aluminum is the classiest, or paint it black or some other classy color).

Then, go out and buy 8 clay flower pots that will fit in the cylinder bores of the V8 block.

Fill pots with potting soil, then have the wife choose some pretty flowers or other stuff, and plant the flowers in the pots.

Then, set the 8 pots into the cylinder bores.

And there you have it: a classy yard sculpture/planter that will attract birds and bees and garner you some real comments around the neighborhood.

Note: you really should fabricate some sort of a stand for your planter to sit on...old railroad ties are great for this.

Enjoy!

So here's a few pics of my house, and as you can see, the front yard is bare and needs a little bling bling, here's what's there now:

So on the front left corner is where we're going to do something:

We went driving around town today, taking pictures to get some ideas.
If you're into this stuff, there's some real nice pictures ahead:

We're still at the idea stage / collecting ideas right now, but hopefully we should have it done in the next month.

Check out some of the nice landscaping shots I tookj today, as well as some not so nice, you will see in a minute.

I'm leaning towards doing something like this (out of everything we saw, this was what I liked best:

Whatever I do, my idea will incorporate a few big *** boulders into the work of art I plan on creating.
The corner we live on is the main street out of the burbs, and people have a tendency to fly around the corner too fast for conditions.

My neighbor told me every winter theres about half a dozen cars that turn the corner too fast, and end up on my front lawn.

Well guess what? Habibi is going to punish the stupid.
You see, in the past, all the idiots wiped out on the lawn, and got towed or pushed out.
Starting this winter, there will be a few tactfully placed boulders that will serve 2 purposes:
1) It will look cool
2) When stupid driver makes the corner too fast and ends up on my front lawn, he will need a new front end.
Isnt justice sweet? It gives me a tingle just thinking about it.

haha

Ok, sorry for the chit chat, here's some more idea pictures...

Here you can clearly see we are making our way into little Portugal:

This isnt exactly my taste, but I'm sure they like it:

We had to circle the block 3 times to get these photos, the owners were on the front lawn, and we didnt want them to see us, besides, we were laughing to hard to hold the camera steady:

The pictures don't do this any justice.
You really have to be there in person to appreciate the tackiness of it all:
