Computer Question
All this computer talk got me looking at the dell.ca website, and while I was there pricing a new system, this is one of the options I don't understand, hopefully one of you guys can explain it to me.
The chip is available in a few different options:
Standard is this:
** PentiumŽ 4 Processor 550 with HT Technology (3.40GHz, 800 FSB, 1MB)
Then this is an option for an additional $250:
** PentiumŽ 4 Processor 560 with HT Technology (3.60GHz, 800 FSB, 1MB) [add $250 or $6/month1]
Then for $1,000 more, this option is available:
** PentiumŽ 4 Processor w/ HT Tech Extreme Edition (3.40GHz, 800 FSB, 1MB [add $1,000 or $25/month1] Advanced Performance
So my question is....
Why is the 3.4 Ghz extreme chip a grand more than the 3.6ghz chip?
(These prices are in Canadian bucks)
Thanks!

It's a special processor/chipset for gaming. What exactly is different, I'm not sure. However, I am sure just putting in that it was designed for gaming will jack the price up.

Plus, the 'extreme' is made with the older .13 micron process & the 560 series is the newer 90 nanometer process. Sweet! Pack those transisters together! Woo-hoo!

They all run at 800mhz FSB, so you're basically not going to notice a difference. Stay with the standard chip.

while i can agree with a few of the statements, there is a major difference between these two chips. The extreme is using the old 130nm architecture yes, but a different pipeline. Something intel is calling netburst. Its their 32bit microarchitecture. Increases the pipeline to 20 instead of 10 (the old p6 microarchitecture). I dont quite know if its worth 1k more but it is more than just an L3 cache. Course as it is with the Intel chips these days if your not using RDRAM your gonna take a hit in performance. So many decisions and not enough money.
