Question Extra Fuel tax on hybrids???

Okay, can someone verify this..

I heard that Oregon passed a law that hybrid vehicles must have a transponder to let the gas stations know they have a hybrid vehicle. This way they can automaticly raise the fuel tax at the pump for just that hybrid vehicle.

It is so that they can recoup lost revenue due to high fuel mileage vehicles. The thought being they use the road as much as everyone else and would be paying less than their fair share otherwise.

I also hear California and a couple of other states are considering this. Is this true?

Wouldn't suprise me...

I am interested in hearing anyone's input as well.... Our next planned vehicle is a Ford Escape Hybrid (2006 or 2007).

Me thinks its total BS. I can't find any credible story on it. Gas stations aren't going to do it. What Oregon hybrid owners ARE paying more for is registration fees...

A few hybrids are not going to make a dent in lost revenue for the state. When they have millions on the road, then they'll raise gas taxes for everyone, or find something else to tax.

It seems they want to institute a mileage tax on actual miles driven.

That's effective gonvernment for you:
Let's mandate higher-mileage cars, then tax people because gas-tax revenue declines.

We're all paying for hybrid technology via government subsidies anyways...without subsidies, hybrid cars are way too expensive.

And besides, diesel technology is so good that hybrids pale in comparison. Once low-sulphur fuel is available in 2006, I believe, you'll see more an more diesels on US roads. Just like Canada & Europe.

I'd drive a high-performance twin-turbodiesel vehicle any day. With better mileage and lower costs that any hybrid.

LMMFAO…

I can’t believe it but I can. Them good ol’ liberals whine and complain about making vehicles that have better fuel mileage and then they want to stick it to the owner and TAX the chit out of them…

If this is actually true I will make a prediction here and now which is that hybrid vehicles will go to the way side just like electric vehicles…

Why make something nobody is going to buy? Sure a very small minority of people will buy them because it makes them feel all good and green inside but the majority of people are not going to buy something unless it is beneficial to them. Paying more taxes is NOT nor ever will be beneficial to anybody…

How 'bout that! Thanks for the link. Interesting concept. Wonder what the transportation industry thinks about this... that's gonna be hard to swallow for the truckers and sales folks...

The answer is a simple one. You simply fill a 5gallon can with gas with another auto and dump it into your gas miser and never even go to a gas station .... okay case closed....

The more I think about it, the more I think the idea is BS again... how in the hell do you track every vehicles usage? A pay-for-use system sounds great, but how do you outfit ALL the current cars on the road to monitor?! You don't. And if you start putting the monitors in all new cars, what about the other folks? Do they pay no extra tax or the maximum tax at the pump?
Hmmmm... Why not just slap on a flat rate to your state tax return? Report your milage and pay the tax. Lower prices at the pump, and maybe a smaller return. Just tossin' ideas around...
