Gun question:

been researchng 9MMs

Lots of folks seem to like Sigs, Glock, and Beretta and the Browning Hi-Power

but I never see any mention of the Walther P99

Anyone here familiar with it? Use it / own it?

Like it?

The only 9mm I have is a Glock model #19. I love the thing. Very accurate and little recoil. Have you been to a firing range to try them out? There's one near me that lets you rent any gun they have for about $5, and they let you use it for 30 min or an hour. Cheap and quick way to test and compare a wide variety.

My brother-in-law has a Walther PPKS in 0.380 - total POS. It has turned me off to Walther altogether. He considers it a good day if he takes it out and it only jams once or twice.

I've shot a Glock 9mm (G26? - the little one). It was OK, but it didn't have the pinky thing on the magazine, so my pinky was hanging off the bottom of the pistol. I'm not a big fan of Glocks.

I have a Taurus PT-111 - I love it. 10 round double stack magazine in a sub-compact pistol that has a polymer frame and a stainless steel slide. It's light weight, small, a packs the punch of 9mm, and doesn't have much recoil. I've never had any troubles with it jamming, and it shoots accurate as well. My Mom even likes shooting it! And another benefit, for the cost of the Glock or Sig, you can buy two PT-111s - one for each hand.

My Bro-in-law also has a Berreta in 40 cal - basically the same gun as the 9mm, just chamber for a larger round. It's a big full frame pistol, but I like it. Again, you can buy two PT-111s for the price of one Berreta. In fact, he bought a PT-111 for his wife.

I like sigs, but have never shot one. However, for the same price, you can buy two PT-111s.

I don't know anything about the Brownings.

What specific models are you looking at? Full frame or sub-compact? You may also want to check www.thehighroad.org - it's a forum similiar to this, but for firearms. There is quite a weatlh of knowledge from friendly people over there.

Don't know anything about the Walther either...

But, I do own a Glock 19 that I love.
I have shot a Beretta 92FS many times too...it is amazingly accurate.
What do you want to use the 9mm for? Recreation? Home defense? Conceal and carry?

I chose my Glock because it is so durable...I take it on backpacking/hunt scouting/camping trips because it is lightweight and I know it will never fail to fire in any situation.

IMO,

I would go with the 40 cal. It would be the same overall size as the pieces that you are looking at. If you are looking for small, lightwieght carry piece, check out the S&W .38 titanium. I just got one last week and love it.

I also have the Glock 23 and like it alot.

Had a nice 357 S&W but sold it...Heavy gun loaded...hard to hit anything with it...

But I like the Browning Hi-Power...very sharp...They have been out there for years and well proven...Never had one jam..15 shot clip 9mm...

Don't like the Walther P99...have a friend that had one years ago...jammed alot....

So many getting killed or hurt with their own guns now...I got rid of my collection ...you need take great care how , where you use them and why you want them...I just liked to target shoot...Why I wear hearing aids now...

In Canada laws now...you can't pass on your guns if you die...I did not sell my M-1...I gave it to a police friend in the RCMP...It was just too dangeous with the 30 shot clip and 18" barrel to sell it...Funny I got it at Woolco in 1976 new...The times have changed...and I have changed too...

Excellent point - to preserve your hearing, double up on hearing protection. Wear the small ear plugs, and then mickey-mouse-ears over the top of the plugs. It makes a HUGE difference, and you don't flinch as much either.

I've had one for a about 10yrs and ran about 1500 rounds through it with zero problems...very accurate.

I've got a Glock 19. More compact than their full-size 17, but your pinky will be on the grip so it's not too small.

Got it a while back, so I've got (2) 15-round magazines. That's 31 rounds amongst just two mags.

I like the reliability, as has been posted. Also, it breaks down into just a few pieces:
- slide
- barrel
- spring
...that's it. You can break it down for very easy cleaning in like 5 seconds, and re-assemble it blindfolded in like 5 seconds also. No small parts to lose, nothing confusing to it at all - an extremely simple and durable handgun.

But now Glock has a .357 automag, which really has me drooling...

I have the Walther P99 in .40.

It is generally a more advanced Glock. I've shot Glocks before and the P99 is more ergonomic, more accurate and has a choice of three different trigger setups. DAO, Regular DA/SA and QA (like Glock). The interchangeable backstraps help in fitting the gun to your hand, the P99 is the only gun that ever felt right in my hand. It is as or more accurate than a Glock or SIG, and in over 1000 round of all kinds of ammo, my P99 never jammed.
The bad thing is that accessories are harder to get because every gangbanger and tuberware fanatic in the world got taken in by the Glock bandwagon.
I would not trade my P99 for 10 Glocks.

Ive always wanted a H&K USP .45, to be honest I dont know much about guns. It may sound stupid, but ive wanted one ever since I first played Counter Strike back when it first came out (5 yrs ago?)

I think they make a 9mm version, and wondered if anyone had experience with them?

Get a reliable Colt .45 model 1911. Can't beat the take down power and it will go "boom" everytime you pull the trigger.

I prefer the Officers model myself.

We just got an m1 in the mail today. Its an original from Sept 1941. Every single peice still 'stock' We are going to check out the history of it, see if we can figure out what happened to it over the years. It has to be my dad's 5th or 6th m1. I perfer the m1a though.

But back to the pistols. Ive shot the berretta before. I personally dont like it. The tigger pull and accuracy just arent for me. But the browning is the opposite. Give me one of those and an m14 and Ill be set for...whatever.
