possible virus, or just quirk...help!

Ok computer guru's....I need help!
While surfing the web the other day (read: surfing ****) I got smacked with all this crap on my computer. Everytime I try to "autosearch" on internet explorer, this crazy thing takes over my computer, and goes in front of my screen background. I thought it changed my background, but my back ground is still back there, and I can't make this image (with link) get off my screen. Its an ad for anti spy ware. The only way I can get rid of it is to reset my computer back to a prior day (saved settings) but that only gets rid of the image, it still comes back when I auto search. What should I do?

There are a couple things you need to do. First download the program adaware and run the program and that should get rid of your problem. (Link) Then you want to never use internet explorer again. First download Firefox as a new internet browser ( Link) Now go through and delete any shortcut to internet explorer so you will never be tempted to use it again. This should speed up your machine, not let this happen again, and you should get less pop ups. Good luck!

Oh man, don't start the Opera/Firefox/anything else vs. IE battle again!

You have spyware/malware installed. Depending on how bad you have it, products like Lavasofts or SpyBot can remove it. Sometimes manual removal is needed. That usually requires a pro.

You'll never stop it, unless you implement a content-filering solution (READ: $$$$$$$$$$$).

Get your **** from newsgroups, well-known and reputable web sites or trade with your friends. A good majority of the sites are just up to no good. And using IE w/o any protection is like picking up a crack ***** for the night - your gonna get something nasty.

Well I can only speak from experience.....using IE for just a couple hours I would pick up at least something spyware related. Since using Firefox I have not picked up the first thing in months....So I guess whoever can interpret that however they want.

jpdadeo - I thought you were going to try out a different browser? Did it not go well for you?

It sounds like a virus is in your System Restore IF you have Windows XP. Sometimes virus can get backed up in System Restore and even though you run virus detection software and kill it, it can still come back because of System Restore.

You will need to turn off System Restore and then run virus detection software and kill the virus’s. Once you do that you can turn System Restore back on again. It’s worth a shot if you have Windows XP.

Below is a site with better instructions then I could provide here:

Instructions to shut off System Restore here

Now I am curious as to how I am wrong. I guess you know something that these spy ware detection programs do not, so now I'm quite interested to know what it is. So please, elaborate.

And if that was sarcasm I digress...

On your suggestion, I’ve tried both Opera & Firefox; gave them a run for a few days each. Neither one impressed me as being better than IE in my opinion. The reason I stand by IE is the fact that I have never had any problems, never, with viruses or any other malfunctions associated with browsers. I don’t care what everyone else uses, it OK with me. I’m just stirring the pot when I prop up IE, and while I’m at it, let me mention LAVASOFT, a wonderful company.
