Now if the hotel had a policy of no political commentary, it would be different, but I didn't see that in the article. I wonder if she would have been fired if she said Kerry sucked, I doubt it. Damn righties always pissing on people's rights.
Tell you what... at your next company meeting/whatever, get up on a chair and start spewing your political opinions. See what happens. Yes, you have the right, but is it appropriate? And don't your coworkers have the right to shun you and bash you and make your life hell until you quit? They are just using thier right to freedom of speech!!!

No, ConcreteGuy has it wrong but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt since the air is thin up north and that may affect the ol’ brain cells…

Here is a challenge to you socialist liberals out there concerned about everyone’s freedom of speech. You all talk about how people are denied their rights or they are taking away I challenge any of you to provide just ONE example where someone lost their rights to freedom of speech in America…

Any one, any one at all, how about walking the walk rather then talking the talk or spewing political talking points put out by the very small minority of socialist and liberals…

Come on now, heres your chance to shine...

First of all, the last line was a joke, lighten up, Burt, you should have known that. I will stand behind the statement that the right wingers wouldn't have complained a bit if she said that Kerry sucked. If she said that Rush had a great show and that everyone should listen to hear the truth, she would not have been fired. If the casino had a no comment clause, then fine, if not, Linda's comments would have blown over in two days. It wouldn't have mattered where she said, you guys would have the wrong place, wrong time comment. Let's see, a Democtratic fundraiser last week, can't see a better time or place, but the righties complained about that one. Someone lost a job over that, and we really don't know what she said. If her rights are protected, she should recieve pay or keep her job.

I personally feel that ALL entertainers should entertain and keep their political views to themselves. One of my favorite quotes is from 1970. A reporter asked Elvis what he thought about Vietnam. He said "I'm just an entertainer and I'd just as soon keep my opinions to myself"

Maybe we should take up a collection here on this forum and give it to LR to compensate her.

Her right to freedom of speech is completely separate from her right to work. She has no right to work anywhere as none of us have a right to work anywhere we please. We as does she have the privilege to work like we have a privilege to drive.

Therefore her rights are protected and she continues to have the right to say stupid things and not be arrested or have duct tape placed across her mouth.

So anybody have any examples of someone actually losing any of their rights? Oh, and convicts do not count since they are scumbags anyway…

I agree with that, many liberals are sensitive when people do not agree with them which is usually about 98% of the time...

Then they complain they have lost some unknown right to force others to listen and then agree with what they say...

Me thinks this whole thing abut L.R. beeing booted becasue she mentioned Michael Moore is being over hyped and focused on the wrong thing....

It seems that even though Ms. Rondstadt made mention of his film, it was only a quick blurb . . .

and that the real reason people stormed out and had a fit is because the show stunk and her performance left a little something to be desired.

Drudge focused on the Bush/Moore thing and it grew legs of its own:

I also believe this is hype by the Adladin President because they are going bankrupt and could use the publicity...so he sort of embellished the politics bit:

From the Las Vegas Sun: (italic comments are mine: k)

Aladdin President Bill Timmins ordered security guards to escort pop diva Linda Ronstadt off the property following a concert Saturday night during which she expressed support for controversial documentary filmmaker Michael Moore.

A bit over the top don't you think? But it get press...just what Aladdin needs as you will see.

Timmins, who was among the almost 5,000 fans in the audience at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, had Ronstadt escorted to her tour bus and her belongings from her hotel room sent to her. Timmins also sent word to Ronstadt that she was no longer welcome at the property for future performances, according Aladdin spokeswoman Tyri Squyres.

How much weight that carries is debatable, since the bankrupt Aladdin is in the process of being sold to a group headed by Planet Hollywood International Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Earl.

Bankrupt? Being sold? What better time for publicity?

Near the close of her performance, Ronstadt dedicated the Eagles hit "Desperado" to Moore, producer of "Fahrenheit 9/11," and the room erupted into equal parts boos and cheers.

She said Moore "is someone who cares about this country deeply and is trying to help."

If that was the extent of it then I doubt this is the reason people lost it...sounds like this was the icing on the cake of a lousy show...as will be seen further down.

Ronstadt has been making the dedication at each of her engagements since she began a national tour earlier this summer, but it has never sparked such a reaction.

.....

The writer of the article later describes the show...which, from the sounds of it, is the thing that really pissed people off ... with the comment about Moore being the straw that broke the camel's back

Other fans asked for their money back shortly after the Saturday night show got underway, when Ronstadt informed the audience that ads publicizing the concert were incorrect. The advertisements called it her "Greatest Hits Tour."

Ronstadt started the evening with her 1983 hit "What's New?" and then set her fans straight about what they might expect during the concert.

"In case you are wondering what I'm going to do," she said, "Driving into town I saw this big billboard up there with my picture on it saying 'The Greatest Hits Tour.'

"That was news to us. We didn't know it was 'The Greatest Hits Tour.' "

Squyres said Ronstadt was wrong.

"Her management gave us the information and approved the ad," she said.

According to Squyres, Ronstadt lopped off about 20 minutes from the show, walking away from an encore portion of the concert, which I attended as the reviewer for the Sun.

The incident capped a generally lackluster, unenthusiastic performance by one of the top singers of the '70s and '80s.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra opened the concert. The highlight of the 30-minute segment was a rendition of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," featuring pianist Terrance Wilson.

Ronstadt began with several songs from the 1920s, '30s and '40s she and arranger Nelson Riddle recorded, among them "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Straighten Up and Fly Right."

She performed Cole Porter's "Get Out of Town," Frank Loesser's "Never Will I Marry" and jazz great Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life."

And then she gave fans some of what they came for, several of her hits from the '70s and '80s, including "Just One Look" (1979), "Ooh Baby, Baby" (1978) and "Somewhere Out There" (1987).

Although she still has that powerful, distinctive voice, Ronstadt was merely going through the motions.

The only song she had trouble with was "Blue Bayou." She stumbled over the lyrics, seemed to gasp for breath at one point and ended the song in Spanish, screaming the words rather than singing them.

Her performance was uninspired and generally flat. She lacked stage presence, doing little more than sleepwalk from song to song.

The fiasco at the end was the most exciting part of the show.

Sounds like the political angle is just hype and what really happened is that a bunch of people whatched a crummy performance and felt cheated, and hotel management saw an opportunity for free publicity and took advantage of it.
Doesn't sound like she gave a lecture or speech, but it does sound like her show sucked nonetheless.

I'm assuming the NS means Nova Scotia (I guess it could mean Northern Saskatchewan)

I've always wanted to go to Nova Scotia, it looks beautiful. Do you like it there? What's it like?

I hate seafood so I don't think I'd be able to live there.

Don't pay any attention to those who knock Canada . . . I've always wanted to go there and someday I will.

Howdy again. I FULLY support her right to free speech. She can say whatever she wants. However, the free speech privilege can be abused. Like others have said (even the casino operator), she was paid to sing. Instead, she got up there and turned it political and aggravated a large group of people, which is very bad for business. A CNN story says about 25% of the 4,500 people there got up and left. CNN I'm sure the casino operator was furious about that. That's a lot of money walking away...because for all we know, many of them might have changed hotels if they thought the hotel/casino knew she was going to say that and agreed with it.

Conservative people often get accused of being intolerant. When in fact, they are some of the most forgiving and tolerant people I know. Take rock concerts for example. Many conservative folks like to go to concerts as much as other people. And certainly they know most rock star types are very liberal, yet they go to their shows. Now, if the rockers got up on stage and spouted their political views every night to a captive audience, the concerts would soon lose it's conservative patrons and would be filled with nothing but maggot-infested, granola-smokin', tree-spikin' hippies.

Linda was paid to sing. She wasn't paid one cent to give anyone her political views. I thought it was funny because the casino operator had the guts to fire her immediately and told her to get out...lest she cause their business to lose even more customers.
