Need legal advice, dealing with a landlord...

Ya, and often times you can afford to pay off a mortgage ahead of time, penalty free. Once your house is paid off, and you are no longer paying interest (even though that is tax deductable as stated) you house is increasing in value...how can you beat it? I' am renting now, because home prices are crazy in the North shore of MA, and at 27 yrs old, I can't afford a 400K house...but I wish I could, I would be making money instead of paying off my landloards BMW. (Oh wait, I think the bimmer is paid off, I'm sure I'm paying for her mercedees now!)

First I will say the owning vs renting is greatly flawed and if it were true no one would be buying property. DUH!

As for the post.

I had to rent for a while inbetween PURCHASING a home and when I left after 15 months my landlord tried that same ***** with me. I promptly looked up the state laws on normal wear and tear. I then procceded to let him know that his lease did not outline wear and tear guidlines so therefore his requests were mute. He pushed one more time so I went and took pictures and let him know that I would be requesting the help of an attorney. At that point he dropped it and gave me (My poorly invested no interest earning) security deposit.

In most states a verbal commitment is a legal contract for up to one year. (In terms of your cat)
He has no right to enter the dwelling without you knowing without 24 hour notice. Your GF was there and is a witness and a judge will (in most cases have to) believe two people over one. You might also let him know that you think some jewelry or money was missing when you moved and since he felt it was ok to enter without notice you blame him!

You as (a non value earning) renter in most cases/states have more rights than the landlord does.

Just mention lawyer to your landlord and he'll probably go away. Tell him that you also expect to be paid the interest on your deposit.
BTW, I tend to agree with Wildchild. If you total up all the costs involved with owning a house and it adds up to more than the cost of renting, you will make more money investing in IRA's or mutuals, or whatever. There are always exceptions, such as being in a very hot real estate market, but that is not normally the case.
