Start getting up into the mid-fi lineup with decent power, cables make a BIG difference in sound quality.
True statement.

what I read it looks like speakers are key.
yes and no. speakers make a hugh difference but you have to have a a/v receiver to get the benefit of the dvd and surround sound

from what i am reading you are on a budget amd you already have some speakers, maybe no the best but you have speakers.

you need a a/v receiver, i would look for something in the $500 to $800 range. yes you could probably find somethng cheaper but you will want more once you get it all up and running. get a center channel speaker and a powered sub and you are ready to go.

For about U$450 you can get a base level 6.1 surround system. Don't expect to be blown away with it though. It will be adequate for a small living room or an apartment where you can't turn it up anyway. I highly recommended a system from Onkyo.

or this model

I wasn't impressed with Panasonic and Bose is overpriced. The Onkyo has real, full size speakers and excellent reviews.
