problem with the stang

i posted this on another forum but i know there is a lot of experience here so i thought I'd post it here aswell

i just got done installing a tremec 3550, lakewood bellhousing and a centerforce duel friction clutch, also installed aluminum drive shaft and an adjustible cable and quadrant.installed other stuff not related to the drive train. the trans was used but low miles. i had the covers off to inspect the gears, all looked ok.
So anyway i drive it and it shifts up great. dont even need the clutch. it does whine a bit in 1st gear but the big problem is i cant downshift. it just wont go in to a lower gear, it does not grind, i can get it in if i rev the engine and play with the clutch. if i stop it goes into gear ok and the clutch lets me pull out ok.
