Oh thats right they are better simply because they arent made by Microsoft.. Ill listen to one of these MS bashers when I see on atht has NO MS software on his computer ...
What makes them better is a built in pop-up blocker. Tabbed browsing. A secure password saver. Built in chat. Built in e-mail (that doesn't get wacked like outlook). The abliity to remember all your sessions every time you start up. Better newsgroup readers. Transfer history. Built in Note taker. And on and on and on...

And Opera 7.1 works fine with my bank, and I'd say about 95% of all sites out there. As long as those lazy **** web programmers do their job, any browser will work.

And MS software is dominant. I use XP and I enjoy it. But that doesn't mean all MS products are superior. Fact is, IE is sub-par and open to many, many problems.

Have you given another browser a try other than Netscape? I'll bet you $1 you'll enjoy Opera or Firefox over IE.

Sounds like you work for Opera Browser Inc.

IE is the best I’ve used. I tried Netscape and didn’t like it at all to put it mildly + Homer can’t be wrong!

I could see NS being the next target. Opera, Firefox and others are way to stripped down to write nasty code for. I'm not saying it can't be done (becuase it can) but it's not worth the effort to many since a very small percentage of folks use them. Ahhhh... I love being in the small, trouble-free percentage group!
IE is for newbs & suckers!!! Seek

I agree that everyone should use another type of browser.. That way I can use my IE without worries!

A browser is a browser.. no matter what. If you don't pay attention to what the F you are doing, you're gonna get screwed over.

Browsers are like religions.. Most everybody has a favorite one, and some freak standing on a sidewalk (forum) yelling at the crowd to change religions (browsers) isn't gonna make many people switch.

DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT!!!!

Will you boys get your heads out of your butts long enough to tell me what the heck is going on???

~

I came home tonight, installed ADWARE, SPYBOT and FIREFOX.

I deleted IE from my computer.

Things are cool here. I like the new setup...it's not all that different.

I guess next I need to get this anti virus stuff up and going and get the firewall thing going. If all goes well, I'll be the next Bill Gates!

Ok, its obvious I'll never convince that IE is sub-par, but to say a browser is a browser is insane. Its like saying a Word processor is a word processor, or a photo program is a photo program, or *GASP* a TRUCK IS A TRUCK. Fact is, IE is full of holes. It's a 16MB+ bloated program. Others are less than 4MB of tight code. No 'auto install' of unauthorized applets. No execution of nasty HTML code. No pop ups. Fact fact fact. If people choose not to listen to the guy yelling and check it out for themselves, then they deserve to get wammied with crap. And even the careful IE users can get it.

My religion rules...

Ok, wow! Now you guys have me totally confused. Spyware, hijackers, firewalls, registry So if I understand you guys (and thats a big IF) I can still get ***** I don't want on my computer even if I'm running my virus scanner all the time? It updates itself so I know the DAT files are current. But I should have some sort of spyware thing and a firewall too? I've talked to people about the whole firewall thing and it seems to me like its kind of a pain in the azz because it prevents you from accessing some sites, getting some e-mails and using some messenger services, right? So why do I need that exactly? As far as the registry thing goes, think I'll just leave that alone. I know I'd screw something up there. I do go into my start-up and take out everything there that I don't need. I have a nifty web-site that tells me exactly what it is, where it came from and whether I need it or not. As for the rest of it......

I don’t know who started that regedit crap, I remember reading it somewhere, but going in the registry and editing is only for very experienced users. If you start fooling around with the regedit, be prepared to reformat and let me just say it now

I TOLD YOU SO

Yup, stay away from the registry.. .and IE

Securing your PC isn't rocket science. If you have broadband:

1. Get a hardware firewall/router to sit between your PC and cable/dsl modem.

2. Get a good AV package and keep it up to date.

3. Don't use IE.

4. Routinely run a spy/ad-ware checker. Run more than one to ensure you catch most items.

Does it have all the other pop up blockers, password saver, etc etc ...

Which is it ??? Its either tight and doesnt have all the bloat applets like IE or it isnt... Cant be both....

I use both IE and Firefox - Unfortunately firefox doesnt work on MANY MANY MANY MANY sites..... To say that the all the minority browsers ( firefox, opera mozilla - whatever ) work on 95% of sites is a rediculous statement. The majority of sites are designed for IE and IF they work with other browsers great. In most cases You CANT get support for using other browsers if they dont work.

AND finally - If you know what you are doing you can be sucessfull, safe and avoid trouble with ANY browser. And if you are a surfing idiot you will get in trouble using an etch a sketch......

It is both. I've been an Opera convert for almost 2 years now. It has all those features I mentioned in a 4MB package. Granted it relies heavily on Java (java must be installed on your PC, that is about 12MB, but it's already on practically every PC out there).

I've had to open IE maybe 20 times over those two years. Your right, some sights are specificly designed for IE. I guess it all depends on what sites your viewing. I shy away from heavy java or activeX sites becuase there is no need for that. I'm after content, not flashy drop downs and crap. I can honestly say that Opera has indeed worked for 95% of the sites I PERSONALLY visit. Another user may be into sites that it just doesn't work, thus the perception the browser is crap. Opera allows you to identify it as IE6, allowing it to trick many sites that check your browser before they serve the content.

Fordvehicles.com was a major bummer as it didn't work with opera in the past, but they got their crap together and now it works fine. With a little homework & tuning, alternative browsers work very well.

I love the last statement, that is very true. But a moron with something other than IE is less likely to get into trouble...

I’m going to give OPERA & FIREFOX a look and a try just to see what all the hype is about.

I’m easily amused
really!
