ROAD TRIP TO MA!!!
TICKET PURCHASED IN MASSACHUSETTS WINS ESTIMATED $290 MILLION JACKPOT; SECOND LARGEST PRIZE EVER AWARDED TO A SINGLE TICKET
Somewhere in Lowell, Massachusetts there is a ticket now worth an estimated $290 million. That’s because it is the sole winning ticket that matched all six numbers in the Friday, July 2, 2004 Mega Millions drawing.
The winning numbers in Friday’s drawing were: 10-25-38-39-50 and the Mega Ball number was 12. The exciting drawing was held in Times Square in New York City and was televised “live” all over the nation.
In addition to being the second largest prize ever awarded to a single ticket, this jackpot win is also the sixth largest ever in North American lottery history. In May of 2000, the jackpot for The Big Game (the predecessor to Mega Millions) grew to $363 million, and currently holds the record for the largest jackpot ever in North American lottery history.
The previous second largest prize ever awarded to a single ticket was on February 20, 2004, when the Mega Millions jackpot reached $239 million and was won in Virginia.
In addition to the jackpot winner, more than 3,139,000 million tickets won prizes in Friday’s drawing. These include 37 tickets that each won $175,000 and 246 tickets that each won $5,000. Even without the jackpot winner, Mega Millions players won a total of $21,784,381 in prizes.
The 37 tickets that each won the game’s $175,000 second highest prize did so by matching the first five numbers and only missing the Mega Ball number. All of the eleven states in the game had at least one $175,000 prize winner. The tickets were sold in Georgia (3), Illinois (5), Massachusetts (2), Maryland (3), Michigan (4), New Jersey (2), New York (11), Ohio (2), Texas (2), Virginia (2), and Washington State (1).
Here is a breakdown of all the 3,139,528 winning tickets:
1 ticket matched all 6 numbers to win: JACKPOT!
37 tickets matched the first 5 numbers for $175,000
246 tickets matched 4 numbers + the Mega Ball for $5,000
10,910 tickets matched 4 number for $150
9,962 tickets matched 3 numbers + the Mega Ball for $150
156,895 tickets matched 2 numbers + the Mega Ball for $10
512,993 tickets matched 3 number for $7
891,682 tickets matched 1 number + the Mega Ball for $3
1,556,802 tickets matched just the last Mega Ball for $2
The jackpot for the Tuesday, July 6, 2004 drawing starts back at $10 million
