What do i have???
What do i have???
I have a 2002 f150 supercab xlt with the 5.4 auto 4x4 fx4 package. What do i have? I read about optional heavy duty trans coolers, tracklock gears, diffrent ratios, diffrent size transmissions, and diffrent engine codes for the 5.4. How do i find out what exactly i have? Im sure someone here has to have something that deciphers tags on the rear end or codes on the drans etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What were the "technical" options for this truck?

Request that they send you a build sheet.

an FX4 would have the biggest tires... and a 3.73 gear.
The tranny cooler would be visible through the grill.
Don't know about locking rear diff... but this is easy to figure out. If one tire spins in the rain then you probably don't have it.
Only one tranny for the 5.4 which is the auto.
There are only 2 versions of the 5.4 that year... regular gas and bi-fuel.
Hope that helps.

To answer your questions...
-If you have the towing package you have the trans cooler.
-The FX4 comes with the Tracktion Loc (limited slip) diff.
-SuperCabs come with 3.55 gears.
-There were three trannys offered in '02, The M5OD (5 speed manual), 4R70W, and 4R100. You have the 4R70W, the 4R100 only came in the Lightning and 7700# if you have a FX4 you could not get either of these.
-The engine code can be found on a sticker on the passenger side door jam. It will be three letters and a number (ex LGA2), this is basicly the calibration code for your PCM. You will need this when you order your Superchip from Mike T. (hint, hint)
-Factory tires were P265/70/17 most likely you have/had the Badyear Wrangler RT/S tires. These are possibly the worst tires known to man.
I think that coveres most of the basics.

what kind of tires do you suggest? what about bigger ones for a more aggressive look and a little higher stance?
why do the goodyears suck?

I have the Superchips Microtuner and love it. If you look at the computer chips area you will see that most people feel the same way.
As for tires... that is a big question that you will have to answer for yourself. The most popluar tires are the BFG AT's and the Bridgestone Revos. The tire forums are loaded with info about the different sizes and tread patterns available.
For me I like the 285/75/16 or 285/75/17 they both are a 33" tire and look good and fit without any other mods. Look at my gallery, that is what I am running.
As for the Badyears... after two sets of RT/S and one set of AT/S on two different trucks. I can honestly say that I don't ever see myself buying another set of Badyears. It comes down to this,
Dry traction = sucks
Wet traction = sucks big time
Driving on gravel roads = really sucks big time (the RT/S get chewed up by gravel) not what I want in an ALL-TERRAIN tire.
Snow Traction = really, really sucks big time.
Mud Traction = really, really, really sucks big time.
It is a little better with the AT/S, but not much
Add to that... they don't look good, they howl every time you turn, the ride is ok at best (RT/S, crap for AT/S), the RT/S are sorta quiet on the highway the AT/S aren't, aren't cheap...
the list could go on for a long time. On a scale of 1-10 they are a -15. Before my Yokohamas I never realized just how good the F-150 really was. My truck handles better, off-roads better, looks better, stops better, is quieter and for the very first time won't go sideways at the mere hint of rain. With the Badyears I would change my route every time it rained because I could not accelerate in the rain, both types, both trucks. Now the truck just goes, rain, so what; mud, bring it on; snow, have not tried yet but I have a good feeling about it.
Just my $.02
