Moonroof shattered

A week ago Saturday, I was driving down the highway when I hear this loud crack/bang/whatever. After checking to make sure I wasn't shot, I exit off the highway and into a parking lot. I get out to look at the roof of my truck and see that my moonroof is completely shattered but still intact. I was on my way to Dallas from Austin (30 minutes into the trip), so I turn around back home and by the time I get back, part of the moonroof had caved in. The dealers are afraid to touch it b/c it's glass. I've gone on a wild goose chase trying to find a place that would replace it. Finally tracked down a place and they said they'd have to order it through Ford anyways for $489. They said I should try to find a used one and they'll install it for $65/hr and it should take about an hour. As for the cause, we had hail a week prior to the shattering, so it may have weakened it and a pebble could have smacked onto it to cause the fatal blow.

So... anybody have a spare moonroof sitting around? Anyone had a moonroof replaced before? Kinda scared that the replacement might leak.

Glen

That's weird about your roof shattering like that, I'd be interested in knowing what caused it, if you are ever able to make that determination.

Clonetek, if he's like me, he won't want to make some bs claim when he can pay a couple hundred to have it repaired.
I save my insurance for big things, and never make claims for small chickenchit stuff.

Getting insurance to cover replacing/repairing glass is the easiest claim I've ever made and worth it to save the $400+ it'll cost to buy a new one and have it installed. If you have full coverage all you pay is the deductible on your comprehensive and they cover the rest. Just takes a phone call to your insurance company, no claims adjuster or any of that nonsense. I've had 2 windshields replaced (on a Cougar I used to have) and several chips fixed and the most it's ever cost out of pocket is my $50 deductible. IMHO the amount I give over to the insurance company every 6 months is more than enough to make even the smallest claim worth it, get something back for all I've paid in.

I took it to State Farm to get it estimated, and they gave me $1450 minus 250 deductible for the hail damage and moonroof. The adjuster thinks it may have been hail also. I really do think that the hailstorm had something to do with it. Golfball-sized suckers. And then maybe a rock kicked up by a 18-wheeler finished off the weakened moonroof. I didn't look at the moonroof in the time between the hailstorm and the shattering, so it may have started to crack and I didn't see it.

I also have State Farm and carry a zero deductible. GlenL, you may want to check back with them and see what the difference is to drop yours to zero. I learned a long time ago that it's really nothing.

It cost me $100 when I was a young kid to get the windshield fixed with a deductible, that was alot to me back then. The agent volunteered the difference in cost very quickly, very minor at the time. Ever since I've carried zero on comprehensive.

I just had my daily driver stolen recently. State Farm paid for the towing and all the repairs and nothing ever came out of my pocket. Whatever I paid in the slight difference over the years I've gotten back ten fold.

Just a thought, worth checking into...
