I am in the market for a new one. The one I have now is about 8 years old. I use it for hunting, fishing, and the occassional BS "where's my house from here". I actually took it on a trip to Europe and Mexico and plotted a bunch of stuff there. I left it on while in flight and kept myself entertained. A definate No-No, but who cares!

Anyway. Who has what? I haven't done a lot of research, and don't know a lot about whats out there. I just know mine. It's a Magellan. My dad has the huge Garmin that he uses for our big boat, but I can't spend that much on mine. I don't even want to pay what he paid in tax! The most I want to pay is about $600. I prefer to keep it closer to $400.

Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If your looking for a go-anywhere handheld unit, check out the g-trex series from Garmin. I love mine. You can load up maps from the garmin map software. A little slow for complex maps, but gets the job done. Its definitely NOT a navigation unit.

I bought a Magellan Meridian Platinum a couple of years ago, great unit with built in compass, altimeter, hunting/fishing schedule and lots more. Now they have a model with a color screen, I'm thinking of upgrading to that one.

BTW, I use mine on bike rides, hunting, road trips, off-road trips and even geocached a few times. It seems very accurate and it's easy to use.

I have a few aunts/uncles that do that, and they absolutely love it! Is there a website that you use? It seems like something cool to do.

That's the one I use. Me and the wife printed up information for a few local ones and rode the mountain bikes to go find them I think we found 6 of the 7 that we looked for, one of them had been taken. The best one we looked for was on the Brazos River, we had to rent a canoe and take an 8 mile river trip to find it. It was a great way to spend the day. I am going to look into picking it back up again, it's been about a year. I'd love to do another river trip if there is one in my area. It's always good to spend time outdoors
