Seattle

I'm moving to Seattle in two weeks after spending the last 26 years, my whole life, in Arizona. I thought I had a job in Snohomish County but it has fallen through...I'm moving anyway. I know it rains a lot. Any other advice for a new transplant?

Avoid I-5 at all costs during all times of the day and night.

First and foremost though...learn to enjoy a microbrew out of Redmond, WA called Mac & Jacks.

It's only available draft... you'll love it if you're a beer type of guy.

I'm only out there 10 or so times per year so, I can't help out much beyond that... Kentucky is a far cry from WA!

Totally kidding. I have only been there once and actually liked it. We spent 2 days there before heading up to Victoria, British Columbia and Whistler. The weather was actually really nice while we were there.

I think you'll like it. There are some really cool hang outs near the water.

Yea I'm hoping to get out after the steelhead this summer and hunt big game in the fall. I've been to Seattle a number of times, it is a great town.
I like Ranier Beer...but it is hard to beat Washington's finest: Olympia. "It's the water"

Yeah, stay off of I5, I we went through there on our honeymoon. 10:30pm on a weekdday night and it was just nuts. 6+ lanes at 80+ mph and idiots abounding, acoss all six+ lanes. "Oh crap, I didn't make it around that semi to make my exit, *SCREEEEECH!* whew, made it over!"

I wasn't even driving and I still had white knuckles from holding onto the dash.

The Northwest rocks. If you get a chance take a drive down to Portland and then down I84 east trhought he columbia river gorge. Come back up through east/central Washington and back through Snoquami pass. That's a weekend trip you'll never forget.

Ok, now I'm really ready for my vacation to Oregon! Good thing our flight leaves at 6am tommorrow.

At least you got to ride up front and hold onto the dash!
When my bride drove off on our honeymoon, I was locked in the trunk because everyone figured I'd make a break for it.

Not at this time of year . . .

Because we are on DST, and because AZ does not do the daylight savings time thing . . AZ has the same time as PDT.

Come fall when we change our clocks back, then AZ will be an hour ahead. (Which can be fun for me when I visit my sister who lives in Phoenix. . . fly back to Lost Angeles in the winter and arrive 10 minutes before you took off. A mini Concorde effect.)

So you're moving up to my stomping grounds? Don't listen to what everyone is saying about I-5, it's really not that bad. Rush hour traffic can be horrendous, but you'll learn alternate ways to get around. To tell you the truth, I don't find the rain that much of a neusiance either. Seems to me that people like to exaggerate a little too much about it. Don't get me wrong, we definitely get our share of rain, but it's not as bad as you may think. I've lived near the Seattle area my entire life and love it. The ocean is an hour away, there are several beautiful skiing resorts within a short drive, and if you ride quads at all, the oregon dunes are about 5 hours south. The scenery is beautiful and the people are, for the most part, fairly polite. You should like it here. If there's anything else you're curious about, let me know. Welcome to the PNW! Drat.
I curse AZ for making me look the fool.

Oh so correct.

I had to make that trip once from Yakima over to Portland and took that route. The waterfalls in that immediate area are unforgetable. I've NEVER seen anything on that scale that was that neat. This trip comes HIGHLY recommended as well.

I agree.
We used to live in Redmond (just east of Seattle), the rain is not anything like what they lead you to believe. Traffic can be killer, took us 3 hours once to get from downtown to Redmond...about 17 miles!! But I-5 is generally one of the better routes, I-405 on the other hand...well, we just won't go there...The mountains are close, the ocean is close and the dunes he's talking about are awesome!! We lived in Florence, OR for a while too and bought a sand-rail to play on the dunes with. If you're into four-wheeling in the sand its a must see!! All in all Seattle is a pretty great city to live in or near and I hate living in cities. Enjoy your stay!!

Welcome to the left coast. The King county political machine makes McCain look like the most conservative person in the world.
At least we are a "shall issue" state for your concealed handgun permit. Just wait 30 days and your packing, after you meet the resident requirements. Oh, watch out for the gay pride parades!

Yeah, be sure to steer clear of Broadway St., there are quite a few "interesting" people who hang out there.

Yea, went out on "Capitol Hill" with some friends last summer...wasn't really down with what I saw.
"Shorty's" in BellTown, on the other hand, was pretty cool, as was "Pesos" in Queen Anne.
Thanks for the encouraging words people. I was really hoping to live in Clearview, but I'll probably end up living somewhere closer to the city. I've taught high school history to inner city punks for the last three years in Phoenix and am really hoping to find a new profession. Summers off do rock though.
