My Alaska Trip

Just got back from a biz trip to Alaska.
I flew up to Anchorage (nice) from Houston, then on to probably the most aptly named place I have ever been. Dead Horse, which is on Prudoe Bay.
It's still hovering around the freezing mark up on the slope and the sun shines 24 hrs a day.
One interesting fact (at last, I hear you say) is that just about every vehicle up there is a Ford. I saw about 3 Chevies and was told that nobody has ever seen a Dodge up there because they just don't cut it in the extreme conditions.
After seeing RockPicks snaps of his field trip to the mountains a while back, here's a few from my trip.

The Arctic Circle looks like this

EA,

Thanks. I was going to ask you how the trip went.
So, what do they do for fun up there, other than drink from sun up until sundown?

John

Yep, 24/7! A few weeks ago they had their final sunset until sometime this fall. We get the effect a little less here in Juneau, its getting light about 4 am and dark about 10:30 pm. Its pretty cool though!

EnglishAdam, Glad your trip went well, looks chilly up there!! I thought you said you were going to Nome?? But anyhow, come back and visit when you can see some more scenic parts of the state!!

My question is... is it bothersome when you guys go to sleep? Or does the light not make you tired as much?

Interesting...

Nice pics Adam, glad you enjoyed yourself.
I lived in Iqaluit, Northwest Territories for over a year (now called Nunavut)

We were 100 miles south of the circle, and in the summer we covered the insides of the bedroom windows with foil to keep the sun out.
It was kinda weird at first, wake up at 3am to go for a squirt, and it looked like high noon outside, took a while to get adjusted.

You would see people at 3am barbecuing, and the kids playing basketball.
Juneau was a breath taking place to visit, was stranded there once without a nickel in my pocket.
I don't remember the name of the bar, but I remember getting drunk at red dog inn, or something dog saloon. (Rose does that ring a bell?)

Nice pictures!

(The government agency I worked for in the arctic, all our vehicles were Ford 4x4 half tons)

That place really is beautiful! I think it would make me tired constantly, though, I work night shift, so I would always feel like I was up past my bedtime.

A lot of people use tin foil on their windows to combat the daylight. It doesn't bother me, I can sleep through almost anything!! We do have a tendency to loose track of time though, we eat dinner as late as 10:00 pm a lot in the summer. The down side to all the daylight is that in the winter we have very short days. In the circle its dark 24/7. Here in Juneau it gets light about 8:00 am and dark again by about 3:30-4:00.

Juneau is beautiful I agree. Alaska has many, many breathtaking places to see. We recently took a Catamaran to Skagway. While we were there we took the train to the top of White Pass...absolutely gorgeous!! Here are a couple of choice pics...The Red Dog Saloon, yep Habibi, very popular place and one of Juneau's oldest establishments!!
