Calling wld-mtn-rose

Hey Karen,
I have to go up to Nome (Alaska) on Thursday.
Should I pack my shorts and sandals or is it still winter up there? Any strange customs I should be aware of once I leave civilization?

Shorts and sandals!! Nome is across the state and quite a ways North of Juneau so I'm not sure what their weather is like. Here in Juneau we've had highs in the upper 60's the past week or so which is shorts weather for us!! The NOAA weather site says Thursday-high 40-50°, chance of rain and low Thursday night 30-35° for Nome.

I've never been there so I can't tell you what the town is like but most people in Alaska are very friendly and have a whole different attitude about things than anyplace else. No strange customs I can think of but wearing Extra Tuffs (rubber boots) is acceptable with any dress code!! Life in small town Alaska is very slow paced, so don't be in a hurry, won't do you any good. And check out the Aurora if you are there after dark, if the lights are out it is an awesome site!! Are you going for business or pleasure? At any rate, have a good time! Alaska is an adventure I would recommend to anyone who has a chance to get here!

Thanks,
Well I am from England, so anything around the freezing mark is summer for me too.
I am up there on business but hope to get the chance to look around. I'm taking my camera so I will post a few pics when I get back.

Next stop, Salt Lake City. Hmm, wonder if I can get the hire car out on the salt flats?

Ok, Nome has lots of history, its the home of the Iditarod, and behind every tree you'll find a pretty girl.... Good luck finding a tree. Nome is very isolated not much for vegetation or otherwise. It's a little dirt hole out in the middle of nowhere.

Nome is nothing like South-Central or South-East Alaska, you'd be better off to try and pit-stop in Anchorage for a few days than to mess with Nome (besides business)....Anchorage has been upper 50's low 60's and its funny cuz 3 weeks ago we still had 40 inches of snow on the ground, I mowed my lawn this week for the first time. Within 45 minutes of Anchorage there is a world-class ski-resort (still open), glaciers, and mountain climbing. For 2.5 hour drive your on the world famous Kenai Peninsula and the activities are limitless.

If you decide to stop in Anchorage, I can get you probably get you a discount on some world-class Halibut fishing out of Seward (2.5 hour drive). Considering I know someone very well, that owns a charter outfit...

Thanks for the offer bandit but it's strictly a biz trip
I will only see the airport at Anchorage when I change flights.
