a little offroading
a little offroading
This weekend i went fishing at a little known spot. I had to use 4x4 mode because of the rain and a somewhat muddy road (logging road) WELL on my way back there i noticed things were getting a little deep and very very muddy!!. I gave her more gas and then the road just dissapeared, gone, bye see ya. Now i was driving for my very existence and so i did not want to get stuck. Well now the road begins to go up and then down again. I am now with stinky pants as my passenger hangs on for dear life. I floor it and she goes but now the road is tilting to the right big time and the truck begins to slide sideways maybe 6-8', all of a sudden bang we slide into something, it was a rock (well boulder). I give it the gas again and now we feel the drivers side front wheel leaving the ground (tilt). I turned the wheel to the right and she goes back to all 4's. Well i punch softly again and we are going slowly and spuing mud all over the place finally we get back to harder ground so to speak and to our fishin spot. I get out as does my friend and we both hear pisssssssssssss. Yep thats right i ripped both valve stems wide open and air it a leaking and in moments i have 2 flats and only one spare. Using my brain pan as all f-150 owners do i came up with a idea. I had a 7 gal air tank in the back and got it out along with some thick screws and screw gun. I cut a bic pen down and pushed it against the ripped open valve stem and filled the tire with air, with my bud holding his finger over the hole where a valve stem is, I took the thick screw and screwed it into the broken valve stem. IT WORKED!! i checked it for leaks and none. I changed the other with the very muddy spare (not enough air left in tank). and we went fishin. What are the odds for tearing 2 valve stems???. sorry for the long post but i do feel better now. Got our limit of trout also.

Nope no other damage to the truck except getting all the mud off the truck this morning. It cost 13.50 for 2 valve stems installed. one more thing i used black tape on the screw first before i screwed it in the stem.

My buddy finds this great area of swamp / small open water area. Tightly surrounded by hiway, warehouses and back roads. Meets all the set back distances for hunting. You duck hunters know what I am talking about....one of those rare areas that are overlooked by hunters and is an International Airport for duck.
We checked this place out prior to the start of the season both early morning and at dusk. Woodies and mallards were coming in groups of 15-20. I can't speak for my buddy but....I was sexually aroused. My buddy says hey why not bring Luke? Luke is my Springer Spaniel and is an amazing bird dog. He has never duck hunted but loves the water and is a strong swimmer. My buddy has trained labs in the past and says Luke will be no problem.
We both bang in vacation days. The entrance is a sharp turn just over a bridge. As I pull in making this hard right turn, I hear a loud bang. As I pull into the parking area, I realize what the bang was - my passenger side tire! I walk back the entrance and find a piece of exposed rebar. I am pissed! Less than 2 month old Michelin XTC. Fine, I'll deal with it later, I am here to hunt.
We get into the blind before sunrise and get all setup. At first light a group circles our decoys and comes in. I have the shot and drop one mallard. I cast Luke out for the bird. He swims out and comes back with a decoy. My buddy says that this is normal and we send him back out. He picks up another decoy and I am telling him to drop it and get the bird. A group of ducks come in see the dog and flail away. Luke comes back to the blind with another decoy and I try to secure him because groups of ducks are coming in from every direction. EVERY group would circle and see Luke moving around, his white tail wagging and would flail away. I thought him being white would be a problem so I tried covering him up with a blanket....no good. After missing out on a dozen or so groups....my buddy says Luke has to F...ing go.
I take him back to my truck (cough) at the time was an Isuzu Amigo. He is a muddy mess so I put him in the back and tie him to the roll bar. I head back to the blind. We sat there for about an hour or so and NOT one duck even flew by. We decide to pack it in and I head out to pick up the decoys and our ONE BIRD. On my way back in, I feel a rush of water on my leg. After getting back onshore, find that I have a 6inch tear in my neoprene chest waders. I think great FREAKING end to the day. One goddamn duck, hole in the sidewall of my new tire and trashed pair of waders.
We get back to the truck and WHAT do I see. My dog on his tippy toes hanging by the neck out of the back of the truck! He tore thru the roof of my soft-top, crushed the support bars and was dangling off the back of the truck! Now its a PERFECT end to the day.

WHERE'S THE HUNTING SPOT?
J/KRaleigh, NC to Milford, MA = 693.09 miles
Round trip = 1386.18 miles
Average of 15 mpg = 92.41 gallons of gas
Average cost / gallon $1.73 = $159.87
MA hunting license = $65.50
MA Duck stamp = $5.00
Your duck would actually cost less than mine.......DOH
But still cost you more than Buckdroppers fish........
I have always wanted to duck hunt one of those Southern flooded swamps. We could always plan a hunting tour? I can pick up Buck on the way down for a duck hunt and you could pick him up on the way thru for a Maine deer hunt?
Christ, It's May and I already can't wait for October....
