Computer help please!

I am running Windows XP Home Edition. And when I go to "Disk Defragmenter", and click on defragment I get an error message that reads "Disk Defragmenter has detected that "Chkdsk" is scheduled to run on the Volume(C)

Wth? I don't know what it's talking about? Chkdsk? What's that? It does say in the defragmentation bar that it's already on volume(C)
Oh yeah, Last night the electricity went off, and when I turned my computer back on, I got an error message as soon as windows opened. I just clicked "ok" thinking it was nothing. The internet and everything else work alright.
How do I make my disk defragmenter work again? I need help ASAP. Thanks in advance!

It usually helps to read the error messages

But my guess is you just need to reboot so chkdsk can run.

I went to the troubleshooting section and it said that if I had recieved any error messages while windows is opening, to go to "RUN", then type in "msconfig". Click on "normal startup" then click "launch system restore". It corrected the chkdsk errors and launched windows with no probs. And my disk defragmenter is running perfect again. Thanks.
