Question for Mustang Owners

My mom's 99 Mercury Sable will go out of its extended warranty in a few months and my father is ready to get her a new (used)car. She wants a Mustang but my father is hesitant because he thinks the fuel economy is poor and it isn't safe. I just don't want him to buy her a Camry.
For those of you that drive a 2000-2003 stock Mustang with a 6 cylinder, what type of mileage are you getting in city driving? Is the vehicle sturdy and reliable? Anybody been rear-ended or had a bad accident in one? Thanks.

I'm not sure what the mileage is for a 6 cylinder, as I have a GT, but one thing to consider is that it has a very small back seat and isn't very practical if you take more than two passengers very often.

Sure, it would just be a commuter vehicle to and from work.

My wife had a 2000 Mustang with the V-6. It normally got around 20 mpg with city driving and around 26 - 28 mpg on the highway. This was a 5 speed car. The autos will probably get a lot less mpg. Seemed like a pretty sturdy car. Way better than those cheapo Camrys we test drove when we had to trade it. We would probably still have it now if it would have had room for a rear facing car seat.
