New addition today!!

Today we have a new pet his name is hunter and he is a chesapeake bay retriever, chocolate brown. I don't know much about him except that they were a breed for retrieving waterfowl in (yes) Chesapeake bay area. We adopted him at the local SPCA and he is 12 weeks old, he is a purebreed but no papers. Anybody know anything about these dogs??. I would like more info from someone who may have or does own one. Thanks. I will post pics soon.

Thumbs up on the new pet buckdropper, looking forward to some pics.

This is OT but I want to ask you a couple of dumb questions while I have your attention:
You know your pond? Do you stock it?
Do you stock it each year?
Do the fish die in the winter once it freezes, or is the pond like its own ecosystem, and they just keep living?

We are looking at a new house which comes with a pond, and I was wondering about these questions, and since I know that you have one, I thought you would be the guy to ask.

Thanks in advance

Habibi

Habibi: I have a spring fed pond it is 16' deep in the center and shallows out to the sides. I do not stock it and never have, i have however placed a couple fish in there i have caught other places such as a few perch, catfish and i have added some grass carp( permit needed) (to control weed growth without chemicals).
The pond has many largemouth bass along with the usual blue gills, sunfish, these breed as the pond is on its own ecosystem. The pond never freezes completly maybe 12" at most. I have little to no kill after a long hard winter as you well know i am 50 miles south of buffalo ny. and man it gets mighty cold here.
a few tips for you is to make sure the pond is spring fed or at least fed by some kind of stream or creek, runoff water is alright but can be a problem at times, ie: no rain,to much rain, mud runoff silts the water and can cause fish to die. I have had the pond for 20 years and have not had to do much except enjoy it often. It is very clear and stays that way all the time you can see all the fish all the way out to 16' depths. I have much more info it you want it just let me know. There is simply nothing better than having your own body of water. The same spring that feeds the pond also feeds our home. oyea the only dumb question is the one that is never asked..... anytime bro

im not an expert, but i dont think you need to re-stock it, once youve got it stocked to your liking. The pond we have (approx 4 acres) hasnt been stocked since the 80's and we catch decent sized bass and bluegill all the time......this past weekend when i was casting hoping to hook a bass or bluegill i saw 2 grass carp that were seriously 3 feet in length. I dont know how but DAM!!!! those were big fish for a +/- 4 acre lake.

Also, my neighbor stocked his 3 acre pond with catfish and bass a few years ago and we've caught a 27 inch catfish before and, yes, a 7 3/4 lb. bass this past summer out of it.

He's so cute!! I've never had a Chessie but I hear they are extremely intelligent and, of course, love the water. He will enjoy your pond I'm sure! Luckily they are fairly waterproof due to the natural oils in their coat and he shouldn't be a "soggy doggy" all the time! However I would research the coat care aspect because I think they take special care to keep the water proof effect.

Good luck!!

Vet said "if you comb him more than 2 times a month then you combed him one time to many". He said there coat takes care of it self which is real cool...

Very Cool! I've got a Chessy myself! I've had him for 10 years now. I know everything about them. Great dogs. Mine's still going strong.

Basically, don't over brush their hair because they have an undercoat you don't want to strip away. It allows them to swim in very cold water.

They HAVE to swim.

They HAVE to retrieve.

As long as you got him doing those two things, he'll be a happy dog.

They're kind of bull headed sometimes, but are VERY loyal dogs and great around kids. My two year old puts him to the test all the time.

Here's a pic from a year ago or so...

Here's a pic of him Retrieving the Paper just Today. 90 lbs of Muscle! Not bad for a 10 year old dog!!

omg buckdropper.....

how could you NOT take him home? What a cutie!
We've got a Black Lab, Chocolate Lab, and a German Shepard/Husky mix here on 1.2 acres. No pond tho, unless it rains really hard, but they love it and I love them....especially when I tell them all to go to bed and they DO!

Congrats on the new addition

Buckdropper and green_98, thanks for the info RE: the pond.
As it turns out, we didn't get the place with the pond, but got another place instead.

I'll post pics after we are all moved in, we decided to go with the heated in ground pool instead of the pond.

Regards
Habibi

awesome dog!!!

We have a Mini Schnouzer (spelling?) and she is great. Not that big, doesn't mind the water, but will get in if need be. but is really smart and is a great watch dog for her size. She is really protective of "HER" yard, but once outside the fence is great around people. So you can take her to ball games and walk around town. And she loves the farm, its like an adventure to her.

Have a 50-60 acre pond thats fed by two streams, only been stocked once and has done great since then. Easily catch 4-5 bass all the time and the occasional 7-9lb bass. Fun stuff.
