F150 to UK??

Hi all,

I'm new here and from the UK, and want to get my hands on an F150 Lightning. Over here they are few and far between, and the odd dealer sells them for sky high prices (around $40000 for a 2001 model!).

Having found a place who ships to the Uk from the states at a fairly reasonable price, where would I have to look to purchase one??

Any advice or links to dealer websites etc would be of great help to me.

Cheers guys
Chris

Chris...

You can start your search here.
http://www.svt.ford.com/home.asp
Click on that find an SVT Dealer button on the left.
There are many Lightnings for sale on ebay also.

Hi Chris, welcome to the board. I shipped my F150 from Houston to England last year.
You do know that you will have to pay 22% import duty on the purchase price + shipping cost then 17.5% VAT on top of that total, don't you?

I will be back over in Houston from April 20th at work and would be quite willing to check out any truck for you over there.

Cheers for the help guys.

I've been looking into shipping costs and it seems cheaper than i expected....

Adam - that would be great cheers . I have a couple of friends dotted about the US who said they would take a look as well so fingers crossed one will turn up local!

I didn't realise you pay 22% duty when arriving in the country? I always thought it was 10%, then the VAT on top??

Cheers
Chris

Chris,
Sorry mate, the duty is 6% for motor cycles, 10% for cars and pick-up trucks under 2.5 litres and 22% for full size pick-ups.
The VAT is compounded so you are paying tax on the tax.
Customs and Excise are very hot on this so don't even think about getting a dodgy undervalued receipt for the truck.
All the taxes add up pretty quickly, for example, say you buy a truck for $18,000.

Truck = $18,000 = £10,000 (at todays exchange rate)

Truck cost = £10,000
Shipping = £1400

Tax (22%) = £2508

Total = £13908

Add VAT(17.5%) = £2433.90

New Total = £16341.90 or $29415.42.

Hmmm, suddenly your 18,000 dollar truck just cost you 30 grand.

Now you have it back in England you need to convert the lights and indicators which cost me about £50 in parts. I did the work myself. Then you need to SVA the truck which is £90. Then you need a class 7 MOT which is £40. Then you need to register the vehicle with the DVLA and get the road tax, £160 for the year plus 2 new number plates, say a tenner.
To get on the road legally, say about £300. That's all there is to it.
The only exceptions are for "historic" vehicles, i.e. something old or owning the vehicle for 6 months outside the UK AND being non resident at the same time. Then it's zero tax.
