Wireless Network Question
Wireless Network Question
I installed a LINKSYS Wireless-G router today, and now my laptop is able to connect to the internet without any wires.
It's pretty cool actually, but I am having one problem.
Our house is an "L" shape, and when I go from one end of the L around the corner, and to the opposite end of the other "L", the wireless connection is unavailable.
Is there any aftermarket product or gizmo that can be used as an antenna or signal strengthener to give the network some boost?
I hope I explained what I need carefully enough.
Once I turn the corner and enter the other wing of the house, the connection is lost.
Any of you guys familiar with this stuff?
Thanks
Habibi

I believe you can get an access point that will allow you to extend the range.

Dude, that's messed up. I have a Linksys Wireless router and it reaches anywhere in my Mom's three story house and anywhere at my 2 bedroom apartment (depending on where I have it at the time). You either have hardcore walls or a sucky router.
Habibi, if you don't mind I would like to add a question to your thread.
How many of you folks have wireless internet on your laptops? Not networking throught a connection in the house or at a Javanet location. I mean accessing the internet from any where. If you have it, how much does it cost? I thought of a Sprint service, but it's $80 a month, unlimited access. I wonder if there is anything cheaper than that.
Can anyone share their experiance with wireless internet?

the Campus has a good wireless setup going. I'm not sure how far you can go, but 6 floors of the library dont stop you. I think you can go all over campus. I'll have to try that some day.
I have wireless setup in my appt, and you can go all over the place. But it is a small place. I know you can get boosters or longer antennas. Check out thier website.

Hi wittom,
I heard what you are talking about costs about a hundred bucks a month.
I was reading the technology forum over at www.rv.net and a few full-timers have it, but it's expensive.
I would love to have that but the service needs to be more stable and reliable, and the price needs to come down,

Well the one thing you can try is switching from G to B if possible. B is slower but it will go through more walls an such, I think it's like 11mbps for B were G is 54mbps or something like that. But since most cable/dsl modems don't come close to that speed you should not notice a change.
It depends on what the walls/floors are made of.
I live in a highrise and the floors are concrete and steel. My wireless router is upstairs and I can pick up the signal anywhere on THAT FLOOR. I can even be at the other side of the building and pick up my router (as well as any others on that floor).
Go downstairs into my living room/kitchen/dining room area and forget it...the signal is really weak and drops to nothing. The signal (both b and g) does not go thru concrete/steel well.
Wireless is fun. You can take your laptop or handheld around and see which businesses or homes have unencrypted wifi routers blasting their signal out. Someone wrote a book for the Lost Angeles area where they drove up and down busy streets and they listed every address who used unencrypted wireless...if you couldn't afford an internet connection (or didn't want to pay for one) you could always tap into theirs. (not that I would ever do that)
The lesson learned is alwyas encrypt you wifi....don't let the neighborhood steal your signal (and be able to access your computer...or have you get busted for doing illegal stuff because their use gets traced back to your ip address)
