Question Can I get a decent Lap Top for under $1000?

I have been thinking recently about getting myself a nice lap top, but I dont want to spend a lot of money. I dont need it to be top of the line, but I dont want it to be real slow and out of date. All I use the computer for really is word, excel, powerpoint, internet, winamp, instant messanger, email, cd burning and photoshop. I want to know what I can get for $1000.
I want a dvd player/cdrw is that included with most current laptops? I'll be using a local dial up connection for now. (we have an msn account at home I can sign on with)
I dont want to get into a year or 2 year contract with an internet provider. (so I may not be able to get one for the best price like at best buy...)
What are my options if I only want to spend $1,000?
Should I just save my money or is there something nice I can find for my money?
Thanks, Shane

Check www.ecost.com. They have some factory-refurbished units in that price range.

Honestly, it will be very difficult to get a quality system for under $1000. Most systems you find under $1000 will have the Celeron processer, which lacks the architecture that Pentium or Athlon chips have, causing them to be slower. I'd recommend that you stay away from Celeron, especially if you are doing a lot with photoshop. You'll be giving up other things, such as screen size (not a really big deal usually) and graphics quality, hard drive space, which again is not such a big deal if you don't mind buying an external hard drive later, or burning most of your work to cd. I looked at Dell home under their Outlet systems and saw a P4 system in the $800 range, which is a decent notebook. You will want at least 384 memory on anything that you buy, with 512 or higher being recommended. I bought a Dell refurb (outlet) system last year for work, and have been very happy with it. I spent about $1700, but I got a lot of notebook for the money and have been extremely happy with it. Good luck with whatever you choose, and shop around, there is bound to be a great deal out there for you.

I've been looking at lap tops for a while now. I wanted something for around a grand. There really isn't much out there, especially to do what you are looking to do.

Last week I went to Best Buy and picked up a decent Toshiba notebook for fourteen hundred. 2.8, 512, 60. That's the cheapest I could find that could work a little. You might want to check them out. I guess it's a new model so there might be some good rebates in the next couple weeks. I didn't get any rebates. No service contracts either!

Check out this web page. This is about as cheap as you're likely to find.

http://pcmag.shopping.com/xPP-PC_Laptops

And no, it's not a bunch of lapdancers.

Well, you could go with DELL :P We actually just bought an Inspirion 9100...supposed to ship April 17th. Mom is going to have a tough time "sharing" it with me

But on the other end, http://www.abspc.com/ is supposed to be a pretty good company, good support, good computers, you know exactly what parts you are getting...I'd give 'em a look. Although I'll admit it looks like you can get a laptop with better components in that price range...

www.gotapex.com has a bunch of coupon codes for Dell's and stuff, so if you take that route, the site will probably save you a couple bucks..

There are plenty of good options under $1000.

Cehck out the Averatec subnotebooks. My brother has last years model that I have borrowed for a while. Since I have a desktop, I really liek the portability of it. They have faster models that are on clearance now in the $750-850 range.

For instance: this one for $1050 - $250 in rebates =$800 or this one for $950-$200 rebates = $750.

How is the DVD quality on a lap top or pc I haven't used it yet. I just bought a portable dvd player for $200 and the quality is great. I'm thinking of replacing that with a decent lap top. How is the DVD quality on the lap top?
thanks, Shane

i found a site with a bunch of lap tops for under $1000.
Pricewatch.com
Then click on Notebooks - Windows
I'll have to figure out what a good min. requirement would be and go from there. I don't know much about computers.
