What is your neighborhood like?

On here reading threads about locks and security car alarms, carry permits, got me thinkin how nice it is livin out here in the sticks of Michigan.
I havent lock the door to our house since I built it 2 years ago and our last place never remember doing it. We leave our keys in our vehicles out in the drive and when we go to most business in the couple small towns around us. I always laugh when some tourist stops to get gas at the local station and "beep" he locks his car to pump gas. Hell, my keys are hangin from the ingnition and the windows are down. Not to say we there isnt a B&E every once in a while in the area, but the kid down the road usually gets caught for stealing the change and stuff taken.
Like I said in another thread, I get gas and stuff at a local station and just sign a post it for it and pay at the end of the week.
I have 15 acres on a dead end road and the house is burried in the back of it, I can go out and shoot my pistols off my deck or sit and watch the deer come in to feed by the turkeys. There is 120 acres of state land 1/4 mile down the road and the neighbors let me wander there combined total of 240 acres of land or ride the horses there.
Now to do any big shopping have to travel 30 miles to find a big town, wally world and such, but wouldnt trade this for anything.
Sorry for being so long, but was just wondering whats it like in your neck of the woods or hood if thats the case.

Life is good here in the sticks Sled...

Sled, you're living my dream!! I'd just like to have a lot of land. That's so cool there is hardly any theft where you are, but I wouldn't be too naive.

My neighborhood... I live next to 2 freaky neighbors (I'm so thankful for such great folks ) in a nicer part of where I'm located. Don't really know what to say about it other than I wish the houses weren't so close together; you hardly get any privacy; everyone can hear your phone conversations if you're outside.

I need a huge brick wall...

Lariat, I think I said that before in your what is your dream post, horsies, doggies kitties, trip to Oprah.
It is great, not nieve, nearest neighbor is a 1/4 mile away, if I hear them, it cause they are walkin up the drive.
And to responde to your work tread, the job is here, 3 to 4 days a week, (which days varies) and 12 to 16 hour days, hard labor work that pays cash. My daughter already works with me so she would like another girl on the crew.

Sweet, how old is she?

I'd sure like no neighbors.

I thought Beaverton sounded familier. I moved from Iosco County a few years back. That is a nice area (meaning not very populated). I can't wait to get back to an area like that.

To answer your question. I live in the middle of a city. At least it's not built up like New York city, just not a lot of open space. Thanks to my wife we live in a nice area of town. Not many sirens or trouble from anyone.

I lived there in my younger, Much younger, years and didnt care for it much other than the weather, didnt seem right to not have snow on X-mas though.

The michigan Law enforcement certification councel. They wanted me to go through the full 16 week fulltime police academy, instead of the 2 week course, after doing the job for 6 years in the military. So I reenlisted to move and got out of the military as soon as possible and moved to a law enforcemnt friendlier state, completed a two week academy and was hired quickly. The only thing keeping Michigan off the list of states to retire to is the income tax. Soot I'd move to the U.P. in a heartbeat. No neighbors for at least 2-3 miles.

I agree with it seeminn like Christmas without snow. Normally I don't get in the Christmas spirt until after the New Year, when it gets cold. Retirement is definately going to be where it's a little colder, the land in not as flat, and not as crowded. But while I'm here everyone needs to move down here (that way my house goes WAY up in value and I can retire in style).

Use to live in Yucaipa California. That is next to Redlands and about 40 miles or so away from the base of Big Bear Mountain. It was a real nice area, not much crime and very little if any major crime (murders, rapes etc).

Now I live in New Hampshire. I live down a 200-yard dirt road with an apartment next to me. Very quite neighbors, sometimes you think there is nobody around except my daughter and me.

I miss California at times especially since I really don’t have any friends back here. I grew up in California so that is where most my old friends are.

What is pretty cool now is with buying the Lightning there are some people, not real close, but within 40 miles or so who own Lightning’s and do things together now and then during the summer (get togethers, New England Dragway etc.) so I am REALLY looking forward to that…

Ok so take sleddogs area of Michigan & turn it almost completely around & thats the area of Michigan I'm in. Figure 8 Mile Road is the northern border of Detroit & I'm just shy of 9 Mile. So yeah I lock my doors when we're not around, sleeping (even if its on the living room couch), or going to be in the basement for more than 5 minutes. Yes I lock my truck when I walk away from the pump at the gas station.

But sled's place sounds similar to my parent's place. They only have 2 acres but are surrounded by corn fields on 3 sides (4 side is the dirt road they live on). They don't lock their house up either.

I live in a pretty good neighborhood here in Juneau. We do lock our doors though and I wouldn't dream of leaving my keys in my truck. We have a nice house that is surrounded by trees in a huge yard. We can hardly see any of the neighbor's houses, I really like that because I grew up in North Idaho on 40 acres of land with the closest neighbor at least ¼ mile away. I don't like living in the city, never have, only here because the Coast Guard says this is where they want us. Why anyone prefers to live in a city is beyond me, being able to run to the store without having to make sure the house is all locked up is so nice. When we retire from the CG we are planning on moving back to a smaller town, just haven't decided which one yet.

Little side note: You guys were talking about snow for Christmas...we just got about 6" of the white stuff last night and it's coming down again!! What ever happened to March going out like a lamb??

Y'all have a terrific day!!

Yep rdy2rac, know that area. Dont go there without the 45, ccw comes in handy then. Try not to go that way unless goin to car show, dream cruz, or Red Wings game. Couldnt pay me well enough to live down there..

But if your headed up north sometime rdy2rac and ya need a beer on the way, stop by, the frigde out on the deck is always full.

back home: 1,000 people. Small mainstreet. Older neighbors, all keep thie lawn like a golf course. Family ownes 5 square miles of land. Other than than that, just your average small town. (oh, having a huge superfund sight to clean up an old refinery) When you look across the landscape now, you barely see the whichita mountains, huge wind generators, and 5-10 oil rigs running. The oil is

College neighborhood is totally differnt. I live on private property that is surrounded by university appartments. So, lighting is awesome for the vehicle, and university cops are alway's driving by. Its at a max of 15 min to the farthest class I have. Dont have to drive to go eat if I dont want to. Bus pickup/drop off is nearby. Its awesome. Have a pool in the backyard. Close to the town lake/running/walking track. This time of year, its a nice place to visit.
