The real imminent threat
The real imminent threat
The real threat to this country and others is the opium coming out of Afgan. and Pakistan. This drug is a WMD. It kills and ruins peoples lives everyday. This sh*t funnels down from these terrorist and into the hands of children in America. It also funds Bin Laden, his regime and other thugs. We could be spraying this garbage with planes and kill it but were not. I have yet to hear anyone say anything about trying to stop the growth and traffic of it. Why? It supports terrorist big time, but I guess that dosen't matter. Instead we put all of our resources and money into Iraq because Saddams a bad person. The only thing coming into this country from Iraq is that black gold not the black tar.
Once again we see some real intelligent answers and opinions. If you want to post garbage why don't you start your own post and do it. Thanks

We did not go to take land. The war on drugs is a different monster. Sure drugs probably does fund terrorism. but we've been fighting drugs forever and will do so for a long time. We need to get those who can potentially kill many of us at one or two strikes. I will not concede to anyone that there are no wmd's burried in Iraq until every inch of that country has been dug up down through the earth's crust. We have enough evidence that they had wmd's and we know 100% that they had facilities and capabilities to manufacture wmd's. For you to come out and say there never was wmd is such a failure on your part. You have no proof or sources. And consider the sources of those who are only "claiming" that they never existed - UN, Blix, and the whacko libs. And to say that the bush administration is an imminent threat is just stupid. You know darn well that Bush wants to keep americans alive. You know he is not wanting anyone in this greatest nation that ever existed on this planet to perish. Why don't you just admit that your only reason for posting anything negative of the Bush admin. is that you are a liberal and you have jumped on the bush hating band wagon. You want to tear down instead of build up. So go away!

If my post isn't worth posting on then don't. Don't tell me to go away your the one responding to my post. This post isn't about Iraqs WMD or taking their land. It's about the war on terror and drugs. Saddam got his money from oil. Bin Laden gets his from drugs. And if I'm not mistaken Bin Laden and his regime are the ones that funded and carried out 9-11. It's pretty clear that you don't know about the opium and other garbage that's involved with Bin Laden and his thugs. And that there's no intelligence in your posts. The drugs that terrorist smuggle into this country fund terrorism and ruin our society. Thats why it is an imminent threat and a WMD.

Back to the original post:
Here is an article in the Washington times from 2/29/04:
U.S. targets Afghanistan's opium market
I agree with your assertion that we all should be concerned about Afghanistan's opium production. I don't think it's fair to say no one is doing anything about it. Most of Afghanistan is under the control of factional tribal leaders and not under the control of Karzai's government or coalition forces.
While this doesn't make the problem any better, most of the drugs produced in Afghanistan are going to western Europe, not the US.
As far as "spraying this garbage with planes", here is a slightly dated articles that talks about that, and why it is not being done:
US Helicopters in Secret Mission to Spray Afghanistan's Opium Fields
Here is a good section of the article that delves into the difficulty of resolving the problem: Anti-drugs experts concede that many Afghans are desperately poor and have little choice but to grow opium to survive. Many farmers borrow money against their future crop, and soon find themselves in debt.
Yesterday one western diplomat in Kabul responsible for drug strategy admitted that getting rid of opium was going to be an uphill struggle.
The crop has flourished in large parts of Afghanistan since the time of Alexander the Great. Unlike wheat, it requires little water and is ideally suited to arid valleys and unreliable rivers.
"People want instant results," the diplomat said. "There is no quick fix. This is a long-term problem."
Speaking in Kabul last week, the US ambassador to Afghanistan, William Taylor, conceded that the Taliban had wiped out opium, but added: "There is a difference between freedom and totalitarianism. We think the advantages of freedom clearly outweigh the disadvantages."

frankjr,
I share your concern over the drugs in Afghanistan and that they too should be considered a “threat” both because they can help fund terrorism and they also have devastating effects on human life and society in general.
If I had a choice in the matter I would be having our military or contracting someone that could do it spraying the drug crops at what ever time would cause the most damage to the crops. I am not sure if there is a ‘best” time or not since I am not a farmer.
However, right now we only have so many resources to spread around so I am not sure what the answer is for the moment. Long term we should make it clear that any assistance from America will ONLY come by Afghans guaranteeing to us they will destroy the drugs and insure they are not allowed to grow them.

. Now there is a typical liberal comeback...
