my bros jeep cherokee shakes violently, need help

he says it drives fine on the highway until he hits a bump/hole, then it starts shaking violently. does anyone know what might possibly be the problem, or have any ideas of what to check?

thank you for your help.

try this...

It takes two people to do this but quick , easy and effective for all except ball joints.
It probably has power steering, so one person starts the vehicle in park (or outta gear, brake on!) and rocks the steering wheel back and forth while the other person lays down in front of the vehicle and watches the front end parts for slop/wear, etc. (not recommended if the x-wife is behind the wheel!)
Any loose or worn parts will show up pretty quickly.

And Clone? If I have to see that Hooter girl by the rr fender once more, I swear I'm gonna have to track her down!
Just don't tell her or my wife, ok?
My Gawd, do her legs EVER stop??!

Also, jack up the front wheels (one at a time), and shake them from side to side and top to bottom while you have someone look at the wheel bearings to make sure that they aren't shot.

balance the tires

I used to drive a f-350 tow truck that did the same thing. Shaking was so bad that it was hard to stop the thing safely. Turned out the be the wheels needed balancing.

he got the front tires balanced, said it took alot of weight, but it didnt make a difference. they were going to balance the rear tires too, but he had to leave. we will check the suspension and wheel bearings, too. thanks for all the responses!

93_snake:

i tried to talk him into buying one. he actually got rid of a dakota for the jeep, so which is worse?
