American politics question from a Canadian:


Does a sitting President need to be renominated for his/her party? Or is it a given that because they are a sitting President they are automatically the nominee/presidential candidate for that party?

I think that if the sitting president decides to run for reelection (if eligible) then they are the party's choice. But I slept throught history & government in high school so I don't know the actual rules.
