Exclamation Reliability and Extended Warranties

Reliability and Extended Warranties

I wanted to get an opinion on a Extended Warranty. I am looking at a 6 Year / 60,000 mile Ford Extra Care plan that
basically covers almost everything. It runs around $1400.

Questions:

How reliable are the F150's (pre-2004 models)
What is the likelihood of a major repair (above the cost of the Extended Warranty)
Has anyone had major repairs
100k comes around fast, is it worth the money.

Bottom line, would you spend $1400 to get this warranty.

Thanks!

Consumer advocate Clark howard says extended warranties on cars are pretty much a washout. If you plan to put a lot of miles on it in a hurry or it's going to be driven hard it may be more beneficial. Half the time they don't pay for themselves.

I got mine (7/60K). I'm the type that drives their vehicles forever. I traded in my 2 year old Mustang for my KR because of a personal life change. About 80% of the extended warrantee transferred over.

As far as I'm concerned, if I never have to use it, it still has paid for itself in terms of my piece of mind. If I have to use it, I'll just tell myself (often) that I made a wise decision...

One thing to remember is you can buy the Ford extended warranty “anytime” during the manufactures warranty period, so in other words you have up to 3 years or 36,000 miles where you can still buy the warranty.

You could wait till it’s close to the manufactures warranty being up and then determine how good of a truck you have (i.e. how many visits to the dealer, does it look like something might go out) and then base your decision if it is a good thing to do…

In either case you will not lose out on the extended warranty because when you buy the extended warranty, doesn’t matter when, it starts from the day you bought your truck and 0 miles. The only thing you “may” gain now is the free rental car for up to a week when your truck is in for warranty service. Other then that your factory warranty is in full affect and the extended warranty (except car rental) is doing nothing for you until after the factory warranty is exhausted at 3 years or 36,000 miles.

That's what I plan on doing with my Lightning since it come's with free car rental anytime it is in, be it for warranty or regular service. Once I get close to the 3 years or 36,000 miles I will then decide if I will buy the extended warranty.

There is a surcharge of $100 for anything over 12,000 miles or 1 year. So the most you will pay extra is $100 unless of course the price of the warranties go up themselves...
