Consumer Reports and the HEMI

I just read the March 2004 consumer reports where they test the new dodge durango with the HEMI and they said quote; "dodge heavily promotes the HEMI, but there's no magic behind the HEMI label. It refers to hemispherical or dome-shaped combustion chambers, a common design for more than 50 years" It also has the worst fuel acconomy 12 mpg and it was slower than the nissan titan based armada. it was even slower than a cadillac suv!!

I told you so!! nah nah nah hehehe (In a previous post I made when the hemi first came out)

It's fun to be vindicated!

I don't know how true this is, but I heard that the Focus uses hemispherical heads...

A Hemi Focus... now if true that would be very funny in the face of the Dodge PR machine.

Nope. Sorry hcmq. There's quite a difference between a Wedge head and a Hemi head.
Just type Hemi or Wedge heads into a search engine and you will see the differences.

The Ford Escorts of the 80's used Hemi heads. It's no big deal.

yes english adam I know the difference between a wedge and a hemi head. infact I beleive dodge made the first wedge head.

I was just poking fun at dodge. almost all modern heads are a blend of wedge and hemi.

all of fords small block v-8's use wedge heads. when they went to the modular engine line up they changed to a hemispherical style head design though you are right it is not a true hemi.

so that is what they call it when I take my hat off?!?

the titan is a certified badaZZ. that motor screams. the cadilac is a 345 hp 6.0 liter engine so no suprise that it is a little quicker. the marketing at dodge is doing a good job, ride in a new hemi and you will think the engineers are doing ok also. think about it 4 years ago a dodge was a joke, dont tell me you havent atleast considered it with its 345 hp hemi and factory 20" rims and the pricing is good also.

sorry brother dave wrong cadillac. the one in the magazine is the new srx (looks like a station wagon) and it has a 320 hp 4.6

the nissan armada can tow 9100 lbs and the hemi durango can tow 8700lbs

the armada towed 6200lbs to 60mph in 17 seconds, the hemi durango did the same in 19.2 seconds. the armada has 30 less hp than the hemi. they don't give torque numbers

I think he's talking about the Cadillac SUV (Escalade EXT) that has the 345 hp 6.0. That's what I have now and lemmie tell ya, that baby MOVES!!!

And it also looks sweet.

Sadly, I sometimes miss my F-One-Fiddy.

Let's all keep in mind.........
Hemispherical combustion chambers are in quite a few modern engines. BUT..........what made the difference with
the 426 Chrysler hemi of the middle to late sixties was the
high pop up pistons that matched the shape of the hemi
head configuration.
I don't know what the pistons in the new Dodge hemi look
like, but if they aren't similar to the pistons in the old hemi
matching the combustion chamber, then in my humble opinion, it is not a true "hemi".
I think that Chrysler is just using a marketing ploy with the word "hemi".
