Mmmmm, but the Heineken we get here isn't as good as what you get to drink there....

I try to get some Duvel once in a while (not Dutch, but I grew fond of it on my only visit to Holland).

End result 1-0

Disappointing game.
US had 2 real good chances but unfortunately didn't score.
Too bad.

And in the Under-21 match last night.....

England 3 Holland 2

Actually, I thought the US team did pretty well in the last World Cup.
Considering that Holland didn't even qualify

CJ - See you in Portugal - Euro 2004

I wonder how embarrassing it is, for the other international teams, to be beaten by the USA in a soccer match? I wonder if they can find any satisfaction in winning, considering that the best athletes in the US don't even give the sport a second thought. In most cases, they don't even give it a first thought. The players fielded by the United States for soccer, while not mediocre by any standard, hardly represent the best we have to offer. These are largely a group of guys who either couldn't make it in other sports, or were interested in being pioneers in an unpopular sport. They are, for the most part, the best of what's left.

I don't think that's strictly valid.
Just because you are a great athlete, it does not translate that you have the skills to be a soccer player.
You could field a team made up from the NFL, Olympic team or whatever and they would probably be crap.
The USA has a pretty reasonable team to be honest. Not in the top flight yet but getting there.

And yes, it's embarrasing when you beat us.

In the States, most schools don't even have soccer programs. Most towns do not have organized soccer leagues for youngsters, teens, or adults. The vast majority, of potential soccer players here, don't even have access to the sport. There are exceptions in larger cities of course; but, skills are learned. The athletes in the NFL, and other sports leagues, developed skills for their chosen profession. They are not hardwired for a single sport from birth. The player they are to become, is decided by the skills imparted to them by coaches and trainers over years of participation. And hard work.
