Towing Question
Towing Question
Alright, I'm too lazy to go searching, so I'd appreciate one of our in-house "know-it-all" experts to snap up the answer ASAP.
Wife and I are buying a new travel trailer in the next month or two, what's the weight limit you guys would recommend for my truck.
My truck:
02 F150 Supercab 4x4 with 5.4
There's a nice 25 footer we are considering, and its dry weight is 3,500 pounds.
I know they say you can tow a lot more than I would feel comfortable with, but what would you guys cap my limit at?
Thanks
Habibi

Thanks Frank.
One more question:
Anyone have experience buying this RV stuff from a dealer?
Is there much wiggle room?
Their "blow out" special price is $18,677 + 15% tax.
I will pay cash, how much of a lower offer do you guys think I can get away with? I have no idea what the mark up is on this stuff?
My first thought was to offer 18k taxes in, think I could save more than that?
Anyone? Help Habibi the cheap *** save some money
Thanks!

All I know is a friend of mine bought a 30 or 32 footer 3 years ago (can't remember which and don't know what brand), and he paid 15,xxx for his. I remember him saying it was 18,xxx retail. His has the motorized extension that comes out the side. He tows his with a '99 Ram 5.9 Liter So I know your Ford will tow a 25' with ease
I know for a fact my Lightning will tow 5000# stock.
Anyways, I would think you could get 3K off the "blowout price".

Wiggle room???
HELL YES, wiggle room exists. Take the motorhomes for example. Lists around 180-200k Out the door with cash for 130k. Be sure and shop around, even if its not the same camper you can get an idea of how much they will lower the price. An easy way is to get bids for the same exact model throught your state and the local states.

A good way to pick up a good price is to get a "year end" model. IMHO travel trailers are a lot like cars with the markup. What you have posted there looks like a decent price. I've been looking recently at trailers (5th wheels mainly), and that looks to be pretty good guestimating for Canadian dollars and all.
As far as the towing you'll have no problems weight wise. If you're planning on traversing long distances with it you may want to look into stabalizing bars. I don't recall exactly what they are called. The reason I want a 5th wheel is because we would be traveling several hundred miles quite often. A 5th wheel pulls a lot nicer, but is usually heavier per foot.

Thanks fellas.
For sure the 5th wheels have more advantages over a regular tow behind TT, but this would mean I would have to get a special hitch, and also remove my hard tonneau.
I like the extra room you get with a 5th wheel, and the fact it's easier to connect to because you don't have to be as precises as backing up right under the ball.
We are really looking forward to getting into something bigger and newer, we've been using a small 13 footer for the last 8 years or so, and now it's time to upgrade, heh.
Thanks again.
