I simply don't understand this type of rise... It NEVER EVER EVER drops that quickly...

We have liberated Iraq and have restored oil pathways for export... It seems to me that Iraq should begin to immediately benefit from the sale of it's oil to the world (since trade embargos were so strict prior to now (oil for food and oil for medication programs were limited at best)).

Why are prices skyrocketing!?!?

RP, The thing here is why can't we do anything about it. How can anyone think we as taxpayers can continue let this go un-noticed. There can be NO-WAY the price of gas can jump this high in 7 days?. I drive 55 miles each way to work and this will have an effect on my budget for sure. We are being ripped as usual by those who are greedy ba$tards. I have been e-mailing,calling my elected officials and i am writing them also. This is an election yaer and someone UP there better notice whats going on DOWN here with the average JOE.
Oh yea it cost me 41.10 to fill up today last week it was 30.79 same gas station same gas same old story same old bull*****.

end of rant. (for now)

Shell's announcement, their oil reserves are not as big as they thought they were and the accident at an algerian refinery may have some influence.
Also demand is high, shortage is the keyword, price will go up.
But stop complaining, you are still lucky.
Gas hit $6 a gallon here last thursday.

We are noticing a "rise" around here also. There always seems to be a "reason" that the gas companies use to push the prices upupupup....... Of couse, some of their reasons do have an impact but the main thing is greed and profits.
If we, as the end consumers, would simply say no and band together, perhaps it would make a difference. As you drive down the road, have you ever wondered how many of the cars around you are simply on the road by choice or necessity?

Simply put it's price gouging/greed. Take for example the extremely cold weather we have seen here in the Northeast. A few weeks ago when the forecast was that we would see some single digit temps for about a week the gas where I normally fill up went from $1.44 for 87 up to $1.52 between that morning and that evening drive home. Then when we got the below zero and very cold wind chill temps gas went from $1.52 to $1.59 in the same day as well.
The companies can claim all the bull they want about shortages and such but it all boils down to them putting the screws to us.
Granted I am glad we aren't paying European prices, I remember being glad to be able to buy gas coupons on base when I lived there which made it very cheap to travel on around.

I was in Watertown, NY a few days ago, and gas was $1.81 a gallon. Maybe it's more there because it's a border town, I don't know.

Here in my city, the gas stations are notorious for raising the price five to ten cents per liter on a Friday, and then lowering it by Mon or Tue.
They are all greedy bastards who rip us off because "they can"

Ever notice if the price of a barrel goes up 2 cents, this gets translated into a massive hike at the pumps, you are correct, they use all and any excuse to put the screws to us.

Look at Operation Desert Shield, when coalition forces were setting up troops in the middle east to deal with Iraq, gas prices "immediately" skyrocketed because "oh, there's tension in the middle east, this will create "uncertainty with the oil supplies"

Fast forward to where the war was over after Kuwait was liberated, did the prices drop right away? When CNN asked a oil company rep why they didn't come down, the standard bs response was "Oh, well you see, it takes about 6 weeks before any savings can be passed on to the consumer, because we have to sell the current supply. After we buy our next supply (in 6 weeks) then prices will return to normal.

Well, this is not a 2-way street with them because even before a shot was fired, prices "IMMEDIATELY" went up for us, but take forever to go back down.

This makes me so mad, I might buy electric fans this spring as a way to show my protest.

I never could figure out how they can raise the price of gas they already have in the ground tanks.

Around here they raise gas prices when they have not had to restock their supply tanks for the pumps, so why should the price go up for gas already delivered.

Cold and China

Looks like China is going to have a insatiable thirst for petroleum going forward, can't be anything but bad news for prices.

The excuse for the recent rise though is the cold in the east. It's pretty much a crap argument, but they can get away with price gouging with oil men running the country!

Buckdropper,

Are you talking about a VW Thing?

My dad had one when I was a kid, and I got to drive it to school in the 10th grade (had a hardship license for work)

I wish I had one of those now. In good condition, they are selling for $9,000 and $10,000...a lotta fun on the beach here.

Ours was the German made, not the Mexican made version.

Ahh the memories

Back on topic.....Super unleaded at Chevron here (tourist town) I paid $1.69 today

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm seriously considering buying a $500 beater honda or something to use going back and forth to school.
